Hi all!

I have a 1956 Ford country sedan wagon with a 5.0 out of a 1998 mustang. The power steering rack is a fatmans fabrication kit for my 56 wagon. This kit is a rack and pinion out of a 1993 chevy cavalier (NAPA part# 22-108) . The problem i am having is the stock ford power steering pump puts out 800psi and the rack needs 1100. The pump groans like you would imagine.
Anybody put a chevy pump in a stock foxbody power steering pump bracket? Does the F150 have a different bracket that allows for the old Saginaw style? Any tips are greatly appreciated!

Have you looked into a heavier Ford/Mercury with a 5.0 in it? You may find a pump with higher pressure in the same size pump canister, it may also just need a pressure relief valve change.

Ford CII Power Steering Pump Replacement

The Ford CII power steering pump has long been known to be an inferior pump that frequently fails prematurely. Our solution to this was to have our own steering pump housing made that takes tried and true Saginaw internals. So now there is a bolt in option for all CII applications. This pump...

That is a heavy sled for a Cavalier rack
I agree with karthief about finding another Ford pump with more output F350 diesel or a Crown Vic (doubtful it would work)
If you were a good welder, you could weld up the holes that mount your Ford C2 pump and redrill your bracket for the cavalier pump

This isn’t a new problem. Just buy the pump Noobz recommended. It will solve the problem, but that is an undersized rack for that application, so consider that when selecting the width of the front tires. Just a thought.

Every document i've seen shows the C2 pump operating at 1200-1400PSI. F150 truck applications tend to be new 1400, especially off the 99-02 F250 with hydroboost.

There is an aftermarket pressure relief valve that will bump that further to 1600PSI. It's more for Hydroboost applications. I run this, but with aftermarket lines. It's not really needed though and I wouldn't recommend it. More for trucks with big tires to turn.

Custom High Pressure Relief Valve – Ford 7.3L Diesel : Running big tires or a heavy front bumper on your 7.3L Super Bolt it on—no guesswork.

It's actually quite typical for the Ford C2 pump to strain and groan. You can probably search around for "Mustang noisy power steering pump" and find plenty of threads asking how to quiet it down. Usually it's a sign of air stull in the system, or a poorly rebuilt pump. I've had a few on my car, some are just louder than others. My current pump still groans.

As an aside: Take a look at the comments from the folks that purchased that C2 high pressure pump. It appears that most of them had the same issue you describe.

Ford E-series vans with the 302 and 351 frequently used GM's Saginaw power steering pumps. Check your local salvage yard and you may find everything you need on one van.
