ive got a 99 explorer. 4 door 4.0L V6, ALL TIME AWD. i couldnt think of a better daily driver. for being awd it gets pretty decent mileage and its super comfortable. we dont get snow very often here in south carolina haha, but my fiance is from Pennsylvania and its nice to have around there when we go visit. it didnt snow when we were up there for xmas but there was some nasty weather/freezing rain and the explorer did great. ive got it on some 31's and i think i might actually be able to put it on 32s without a lift. ill prolly try that next time i go to put some meats on it, i think they would fill out the wheel wells just about perfect.

just don't buy a dodge ram (94-01) i have a 99 1500 ram sport 4x4 that i just bought for $7,000, it has a nice 318ci, i put about 12,000 miles on it and the tranny slips into 3rd gear, these trucks are known for TERRIBLE tranny problems. and i just changed the fluid and filter in the trans as well as adjusted the clutch bands, still no luck, so the clutch band on the front must be toast. Its funny how it only does it going from 2nd-3rd. Im having mine rebuilt with VERY heavy duty clutches. I should've bought a chevy or gmc truck but couldn't find one cheap...
Dude that sucks! im staying from dodge period. my mom has a caravan and she has had the tranny replaced 4 times. its nuts. i think ill stick to ford or chevy.. no stang as a dd.. lol bummer haha

If it's snowing bad, i stay home. Even if i had an SUV i'm not driving around in 10"+ of snow. It's not me i'm worried about but some other moron sliding into me.
I've driven my GT in light snow with the OEM tires. It has ABS and T/C so it is managable but it's not the best. A 5-spd is a lot better for slick weather since you can start in 2nd and have better control on rocking the car if you get stuck.
I've driven Mustangs in the winter since I was 16 and not really had a problem except for the 5 or so days a winter when i say it's not worth it to drive and just bum a ride off someone.
I remember a couple years ago during one of the blizzards we had i went out in the snow because i was stupid and bored. Well my Mach 1 chin spoiler was catching the top of the snow on the road and it was building up like a plow!! I remember having trouble in deeper snow because of this. Snow was getting all packed into my foglights and lower grill area! It was funny looking at the road because you'd see where my tires were and then the area flattened by the chin spoiler! I had to take it home after that
i dont have any pics of either of my cars on my computer actually...kinda sad. its got 110k on it and i have yet to have a serious problem out of it yet... *knocking on wood* haha. but yea, i love the thing. the only way i can see myself getting rid of it before it dies is if im in a position to buy an 05ish F-150 FX4 anytime soon.

I like my Cobra as a DD but I have not had it in real snow yet. I drove it in the snow last week but around here that means the roads were slushy and the grass had snow in it. I thought the car did great.

I drive my 4.6 almost every day, unless it's snowing/sleeting/freezing rain outside. It's a very nice DD.

I drive a 98 gt (non-pi) as my daily driver and a 5.0L as another mode of transportation, fun car.
Last week it snowed here, it was a long way home, but you can drive in the snow if you know your limits and don't "blip" the throttle. Just be safe.
A 4wd cherokee would be an advantage for sure, a 2wd probably not much difference than a 2wd stang on snow/ice.
Sometimes I get tired of driving cars, and I would like to have a suv/truck.
I do not ever worry about my newer car starting or having longevity issues like I do with my 5.0L. The piece of mind is great.
I would try to avoid snow/ice in a stang anyways, if possible. I have never used chains.

dont do it.. lol. not for a DD. My definition of a DD is something that does 50% better (than the stang) in bad weather. A 4.6 non pi still sucks in bad weather which sucks for a car you have to depend on.

To be honest, if i really had the money to invest in another DD, it would come down to 4 options (i know that's still not narrowing it down too much).
1. a Wrangler Rubicon, even though i'd probably be just as happy with putting a lift on my XJ (this is more if you don't already have any 4wd DD yet)
2. an AWD Explorer 5.0 that i could do some modding with. This might not be the best option for mileage, but the Rubicons get RETARDED low mileage anyways (i don't think that's been mentioned but it's super super bad, like 10mpg on the highway! My XJ is about 16 on the highway)
3. (puts on flame suit) An Evo VIII, because i don't care what anyone says they're badass cars and very capable in snow
4. A Subaru Impreza WRX STi, for the same reasons i'd have the Evo.
The problem is that i'd want to mod all of the above....which eventually might take away from the reliability/fuel economy, even though none of those have really good mileage anyways. It all comes down to 3 things; 4 doors so i can haul around the family, AWD/4WD for the snow, and FUN factor. I won't be one of these people driving boring ass Honduhs for DD if i can avoid it.

I drove a 99 Stang one winter in Pennsylvania, and that car was great in the snow. Still had the stock tires on it and you should have seen some of the hilss that car climbed without much of a problem. I know I was impressed how well that car went in the snow. I remember driving it in up to 8" of snow. It was much better than my Fox's are in the snow, though I really don't think Fox's are that terrible.
well my 92 cherokee gets like 19 (20 if im lucky) on the highway so its not bad. I had an 03 WRX which i LOVEEEEDDDD just the payments and insurance were insane. Im actually thinking about getting another 02-03 WRX with some miles on it since it would be cheaper then before. the car was sooo much fun in the snow!!

Dude, anything that's derived from WRC racing is badass in my book. I put them at the bottom of my list because of the payments and insurance. I probably would just keep my Cherokee but if i had to buy something, it would either be a Wrangler/Cherokee or the AWD 5.0 Explorer.
I've been wanting to do a badass Explorer for a long time.....just think, a nice 347/AFR combo with a nice lumpy cam, a T56 behind that and nice rippy exhaust....
Actually if money weren't an issue, i'd probably take the Explorer and bolt a KB Cobra 4.6 in it
