5w20 Oil In The S550 V8 Mustang Gt

I'm a new member of the forum and seriously considering getting the 2015 Mustang GT 5.0 V8 with the Performance Package. Very impressed with this car. Have a couple questions I'm hoping some of you with this set up may be able to answer:

1. I've never had a performance car that used 5w20 oil. I know some of the current Jaguars run this weight oil so I suppose there is a precedent, but I've always thought of this weight oil as a fuel economy oil best used in cars like a Prius or Toyota. Are there any concerns or problems that some of you may have encountered (so far) using the factory spec'd Motorcraft 5w20? Anyone done a used oil analysis on this oil in their Mustang using the factory oil change interval? If so, how does the viscosity stand up?

2. Does Ford allow the use of 5w30 synthetic oil as long as it meets their oil spec, WSS-M2C 945-A?

3. I'm guessing the factory fill is the 5w20 synthetic blend. What is the factory oil change interval for this oil? What is the factory recommended oil change interval if you use the Motorcraft full synthetic 5w20?

4. What is the normal operating oil temperature (for those of you that have an oil temp gauge)?

5. I'm guessing that Ford uses an oil life monitor or oil condition sensor of some sort in the sump. Am I correct?

Appreciate any feedback. I've asked these questions of dealer personnel and of course they are clueless.

Welcome to Stangnet!

As far as question number one goes, no one that I know (and I'm rather involved with the car community) has ever had an oil related engine failure. This does not include a broken oil pump or gerotor gears in the oil pump and has nothing to do with the type of oil in the motor. As far as type of oil to use, I stick with the factory recommended 5w20 but do not personally use the Motorcraft oil. Ford would be hard pressed to go through the pain stake to test the oil if there was a failure of some sort.

I personally am not a gauge guy and just don't look at them... call it what you will, I'll drive it till the rods fall out AFR is the only thing that really matters for anything that I'm doing with mine. There is an oil life monitor but I'm not sure how that system works, I'm more old school with the 3,000 mile change interval myself. It has never failed me before

If you are using full synthetic, i dont see why you wouldn't follow 5/10 cycles - obviously after the break in oil is done with at the appropriate time.

As 84Ttop mentioned, the 2015 Mustang is equipped with an Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor that determines when you should change the engine oil based on how your vehicle is used. By using several important factors in its calculations, the monitor helps reduce the cost of owning your vehicle and reduces environmental waste at the same time.

This means you do not have to remember to change the oil on a mileage-based schedule. Your vehicle lets you know when an oil change is due by displaying ENGINE OIL CHANGE DUE or OIL CHANGE REQUIRED in the information display. The following table provides examples of vehicle use and its impact on oil change intervals. It is a guideline only. Actual oil change intervals depend on several factors and generally decrease with severity of use.

You can find this info and more details in your owner’s manual, on page 417.

Here’s the oil we recommend, but you should be fine as long as you make sure the materials used meet the specifications identified in the owner’s manual, on page 280:

I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure that both my '97 Cobra and '10 Mustang GT used 5w20 .

Thanks everyone for the feedback. Deysha, it's nice to know that the Head Shed monitors this forum.

I was just curious about the "thin" 5w20 and its ability to maintain film strength in a hi-po motor like the Mustang V8. I'm used to cars like the GT500 with 5w50 (I used to drive a BMW M3 which required 10w60). But I guess today, it's "thin is in". I've read that some lube mfrs (Exxon/Mobil I think) are working on a 5w16 motor oil, so maybe before too much longer 5w20 will be considered a lube on the heavy side.
