Hi All,

I've been looking around for a good HID to install, I settled for the Gtech Kit which is Japenese/Korean product for sure, based on cost at $234 shipped it has to be. I currently run 5400K Sylvania Xenarc HID fogs, so I made sure to match the Kelvin colour so my fogs and heads look the same. Currently it looks goofy to have bright white fogs and pale yellow heads. I really agonized over the decision to run a ballast/bulb/relay setup vs a custom projection lens/bulb/ballast install, but given in North Carolina HID's of any kind can be a problem during inspection. So I opted for the conversion, that way I could more easily convert back to stock headlights for annual inspection. I could have gotten a BMW E-46 bi-xenon setup($400 very good price) but...the custom install would wreck my stock reflector and make it impossible to go back stock without a new stock bulb/recflector assembly.

So now....my question can you guys post your night pics of your HID conversions so I can see how bad the glare might be. I'm hoping for enough adjustment in the factory housing to get most of the beam down some so its not too bad for oncoming traffic.

I think you are referring to a seperate kits that have a separate "igniters", the igniters are like little capicators, that help the punch the HID bulb(capsule) with a 25000 volt charge after you flip the lights on, after that the ballast will maintain a costant high voltage around(1500volts) to the bulb to maintain the light, thats why true HIDs, have a warm up period before the light settles down to proper brightness. 99.5% of all true HID setups will have a seperate ballast/inginter Actually most of the OEM Japanese cars like Maximas have the ballast/inginter together, lots of the Hella Kits for the Bimmers still have a seperate inginter/ballast. The seperate ingintors are gradually going away as the electronics improve...sorry to be long winded just wanted to give you the whole story.

Ya, you're right. I re-read the post and the ballasts that incorporate the ignitors are more preferred.

Take a look at the pic I posted, you will see the recentagluar HID fog just barely fits in the stock plastic housing, I had to cut out the back of the stock housing to allow for the deeper HID fog. Install time is about 1 hour.. the fogs are hard to get at becasue they are so deep in the front facisa.

a tip is to make sure to waterproof the ballast pretty good. Even if you can mount them in a relatively dry spot, water will still reach them. Condensation is the killer. I ended up using some of that plasti-dip stuff around the seams of the ballast, great stuff. Also they came with covers.

Just a update, I got my GTech 6000K kit($234) in today and they are installed, general comments about the kit, its from a Japanese maker Gtech, the kit is as pictured above, the power/rely/harness was nicer than expected. It had a small and 25amp inline fuse and seperate power and ground wires, nicely covered and even had wire lomb covering, it had a small relay attached. Installation was a breeze. You will need basic DC electrical knowledge of your car. The instructions where hilarious the translation is so funny I may scan and postit for your enjoyment. If you have wired a stand alone set of fog lights you would have no trouble with the install. The great thing is that, you can just pull the HID bulbs back out and pop in your stockers and reattach your factory harness. It would take no more than 10min to switch back to clear inspection, The ballasts and HID harness can all stay in place if you need to run your stock bulbs. I'm waiting till evening and I'll go out and take some night pics for everyone and post them later. I give the install :nice: :nice: :nice: 3 thumbs up.
 
hey, i got the same kit, purchased from matt at stang mods. Ive had the kit now for 7 months with no problem. installation was a breeze. Maybe i can buy a new set of bulbs 8000k..FTW...haha...ill try get some pictures up too
 
Stangless, actually the wattage is lower than the stock bulbs draw. the HIDs operarate at 35watts vs stock halogens at 55w or more. The HID problem is that at first turn on they need high voltage draw to charge the ballasts(think kinda like flourest lights), low wattage but, lots of volts at start up something like 2000volts, so they draw power directly from the battery, but after start up the stock harness would work(if you could get around the start up thing) so to fix that, the HIDs pull power from the battery and avoid the whole problem. After startup they are nearly 30% more efficent than our stockers and produce between 2-3 time the light.
 
Heres some night pics, sorry for quality but I was in a tshirt and it was freezing outside. My fogs are 5400K Sylvania Xenarc HIDs, the headlights are the GTech 6000K HIDs. Once they are warmed they look identical, whats funny is the 5400K Sylvania's actually are ever so slightly purplish...very slight and the headlights are ever so sligthly blueish. This not what would be expected based soley on the Kelvin rating(you would think opposite based on Kelvin temp), but since the Xenarc fogs actually have the correct HID lens, they appear purpleish...just like the BMW and Audi's do because of the projector lens they both have even though they are only 5000K in those cars.

I think 6000K is best...any higher would be too purple, but ever one has different taste.

Do you have yours wired for seperate foglight operation? I'd like to see the fogs only light output. Also in the pice above are your foglight housings plastic? Mine are steel.
