66 289 single piece oil pan gasket question

I just bought a fel-pro single piece oil pan gasket (rubber coated over metal) and had a quick question. I assume this goes on completely dry (with no gasiginch sealer or any silicone anywhere) is this correct or would you put any type of sealer anywhere on this? If so, which side. I figured i'd ask rather than have a pesky leak and have to re-do. Thanks, brian

you can put it on dry, but i like to put some rtv in the corners at least to prevent leaks in that area. i usually put a very thin coat on the gasket on both sides the way around as added insurance against leaks. in that instance i usually use #2 permatex as it is non hardening.

I went thru this on my Comet's 331. Use a dab of RTV in the corners of the pan end radius' and use a thin film on the raduis of the timing cover and rear main cap and let the RTV cure a bit to keep the ends from creeping out from the pan.

And do not toss out the blue plastic studs when you're done. You WILL need these to install the pan on the motor in the car, if you ever have to pull it. These things are life savers for an in the car pan install..

Ya, and the Ford Motorpsort gasket doesn't come with them..... such a PAIN without those.

If you need a set Rusty, I'll mail you some. I've got about 3 sets. I rarely ever throw stuff away

I need to buy a new 1 piece pan gasket for my next motor as it is so I'll just get a Felpro one this time and it should come with them. If they short change me on it, I will shoot you a PM.

I use the grey sealant. Works real good. I hate leaks.

go buy the oil pan rails from a ford dealer. a little more insurance tha you will never have ANY leaks.

We coat both sides on front sump pans. They are stamped on the rails, so they can leak there with a rubber gasket. They were designed for the late model stuff. And those pans have flat rails, and work great.

Ditto on the pan rail stiffeners, but I get mine off junkyard motors along with the longer bolts that they need. Cheaper that way
