66 mustang red light on in speed...

i took othe 66 stang today turned lights on went to get gas...started it back up with lights on and now this red light is on within the speedometer?

i parked at home, turned lights off and started it up, no red light. i turned parking lights on. no red light. i turned on lights and a red light came on. i started it no lights, and no light, it only comes on when reg lights are on whether on or off...what does this mean..charging ? battery?

It's the high beam indicator. Activated by the button on the floor.

well that would explain it...lol...dont have a manual thus the question...plus my garage really dark took it out for gas around 5am-6am....where exactly is this button on the floor....switch or button.?

It is basically a button-switch. LOL

It is the metal post looking thing coming out of the carpet, on the very left, near the kick panel (up by where your foot would rest.) You step on the post in order to switch from high to low beams, and vice versa.

Must be a new mustang for you or have you been driving like this for years? My indicator is actually a little running horse when it lights up. Don't know if the 66 had this.

i feel like a jackass i just got the 66 about 3 months go never drove it at night early day break must have engauged the high beams by accident at some point,.

Mine is just a solid red indicator. LED...i assumed red= BAD. Thought blue would be high beam but apparently not back then.

On my 70 it's a blue color.

did you find the high/low button on the floor?

Trust me, that is not an LED! It would have cost a small fortune and been eons ahead of it's time back in 1966! It is just a red piece of plastic with an incandescent light bulb behind it like your dash illumination.

Man, oh man! Too funny! You must have been wondering why everybody was flashing their high beams at you!

My '68 also has the little "Mustang" horse on the light. The '65-66s don't; my '65 just had a plain red dummy light.

Yeah, light-emitting diodes didn't exist until the early to mid '70s and they were barely "light-emitting". Modern LEDS are quite versatile and a conversion wouldn't be hard. Unfortunately something special has to be done or the dash light brightness can't be adjusted very well.

With how bright modern headlights are, do you think anyone knew he had the high beams on?

sometimes my high beams would seem as bright as other veh's regular headlights - not many would flash at me

it's cool they did that high beam switch on the floor in my old '84 ford F150, got the '66 and was used to it already

Now you need to find one of those "Old School" black and chrome barefoot switches to install over the dimmer switch!!

p.s. they also make big barefoots for the go pedal if you want to go all the way

I actually have one of those! I took it off the other week though because it binds on the carpet and underlay.

I remember those from back in the day..
When I was about 9 or 10 years old.
I had neighbors that were into 55-57 Chevy's.
They put a set of those Barefoot pedals on and I thought it was so cool!
Its funny how certain images just BURN into your brain.
I used to "help"them wrench on their cars in the driveway for hours on end.

LOL. When I was in High School(2002), my friend had that for the dimmer on his '68. It matched the white shag carpet and lack-of-dashpad interior scheme he had going.
