66 shelby side scoops,rivet ,bond or both?

I am about to install the '66 Shelby side scoop's on my convertible,originally they were riveted in place ,now I see that the Eleanor's fiberglass is bonded in place with two part panel adhesive ,is it O.K. to just bond them in place?having never worked with this stuff before ,I thought I'd ask ,also ,can you bond the fiberglass directly to edp coating?or does the stuff need bare steel to make a strong bite?plus on the scoops, it only gives you an area 1/2" wide to work with ,if I use two part only ,will it be enough area?sorry for so many question's.

10 years ago I pop riveted mine on and have been really happy with how sturdy they are. I am no body man so it seemed easier at the time and you cant see the rivits unless you get down close.

I know what you mean about the narrow lip. There's not much there to rivet to. Mine are glued on with the panel adhesive you are talking about. I don't remember if they were glued to bare metal or over the primer. By gluing them on, we were able to mold them into the body. Instead of having the small gap between the scoop and body, mine have a very tight radius countour to the body. The adhesive if very strong. Once it's set, you'd have to break them off and grind off the excess if you ever wanted to remove them.

Yes you can just bond them. 3M# 8115 is what most people use. And yes it must be bonded to bare steel.

Thank You for the advice,now that I have the bond option I might opt for that.

i have mine riveted on and molded into the body....no problems.

mine are bonded on with the 3M stuff. very nice. and then fiberglass molded into the body. the rivets are a waste with new technology.

Well, these pictures are kind of hard to tell detail considering the color of the car, but it might give you an idea.

im surprised no one has cut a hole in them and run them to the brakes to cool em off.

It can be done, but on a coupe you run into interference with your quarter windows when they're rolled down. Plus, I've heard a lot of debate over how much air they actually catch anyway.

That's probably why on the original 6 convertible gt350's the scoop's were non functional?

I'm having side scoops installed on my 65 and I'm wondering how you guys handle closing them up. I don't intend to make the scoops function and they look a little funny open. Thoughts? Suggestions? Pictures?
