66 water pump

have the cast iron water pump with backing plate over impeller
question is can i just replacw with aluminum water pump with no backing plate

you need to use the backing plate to keep the correct impeller to wall clearance. If the clearance isn't right, the pump doesn't function properly, it just makes a bunch of bubbles and turbulence instead of pumping water.

Also depends on what timing cover you have. There are at least two different covers, one's deeper behind the pump, that one requires the backing plate.
