67 289 AC belt/pulley dilemna. :shrug:

Here is the situation:

67 FB with 289 and stock A/C. It's a California car, so it had a Smog pump in the mix and belt runs to it. It goes Crank/ AC/ Smog pump. I want to toss this Smog pump that's noisy, worn out, useless and an eyesore, but it appears that I could not run a belt directly from the crank to the AC if I tried.

I'd like to run it through the water pump (that is if it had 3 grooves in it). The water pump pulley only has 2 grooves.

What to do?

Is there out there a water pump pulley with 3 grooves? NPD does not know...

My 66' 289 WP pulley has 3 grooves (1 small,2 large) also a california smog motor (I believe) so they are definately out there. You might try Laurel Mtn., or Dallas Mustang. HTH.

PAW used to sell the 3 groove pulleys. Can you tension the belt with the A/C compressor ? Or does it use the smog pump for this ? The non smog cars used the idler pulley on the A/C bracket (driver's side of engine) to tension the belt.

This might be the ticket, as I"m sure there's no adjustment on the AC pump side. The Smog pump used to be the one that tensionned the belt.

My 67 was a CA car too but when I removed the smog pump it was on its own belt.... Wierd... I wonder if I still have my accessory brackets in storage...

March is a company that makes high-end (dollar) accessory brackets and pulleys for many applications. Some of their complete front accesory drive systems run well over $1000 and I think some double that.

I reused the stock bracket with some mods done to it.
The sanden comp is smaller and lighter but I didn't like the way the idler bracket attached to the pump.

With cutting it down and making my own mount, I have more room to the dist and water outlet.

Just take your time and line up the belt/pulley so it won't fly off at 6k rpm.

Apparently, I should be able to use a 65-66 adjustable idler pulley. I think that it mounts to the water pump and should do the job. I saw a picture of a car equipped as such and it looks like it will work on mine.

It's $80 through NPD. I will search for a better deal in the meantime, but it looks as it this should do the trick.

It is the pivot point of the alt and the 2 sets of slots adjust idler as it bolts to the waterpump. There is another setup that has a pivot on the "dog leg bracket" but i dont have that.
