If you plan on using nitrous, you will need to get a converter with anti-ballooning plates. As for waht stall you acually need, we would need to know more about ur engine (cam, compression, rear end, daily driver or street/strip). As for shift kits, they are just small modifications you do to your stock valve body shift harder. i've heard good things about one made by Transgo. I just put a B&M transpac in mine, haven't got a chance to test it out yet but ill tell u how it is.

I also have the B&M in my car, and i must say i love it. It shifts hard and very crisp. Also, not to steal your post (especially with this n00b question), but what is a stall converter?

70machwon, it's the clutch basically for an automatic. I have the transgo kit. The kit also has another kit in it to change your stock valvebody into a manualvalve body. This kit shifts awesome without running crazy mainline pressure. High line pressure tends to lead to cracked cases and premature wear on seals.

I agree. One thing on the shift kit though, are you planning to install yourself or have someone install? Cause if you plan on having someone install, then you can save the money for the kit. If the tranny guy knows what he is doing, he will know how to drill your stock plate in your valve body and do a few other things that will make it shift just as hard as the kit. Just an idea. As for upgrading the tranny itself, it just depends on how much hp your going to put to it. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

As 10sec said it is basically the clutch for an auto. Your tranny has a torque converter that basically has a stall of around 1000rpm. Now imagine if you built an engine with a big cam and made your best hp starting at 2500rpm-6000rpm as a powerband. If you had a manual, you simply rev the engine to above 2500 rpm and let go with the clutch(slowly or fast depending on the kind of launch you want) and you are in your engines powerband. With an auto, you need a converter that will stall at 2500rpm to do the same. That is a basic description, as Taylor said, your engine combo and rearend plays a part in deciding your stall.
