67 FB , 428CJ, C6, All aluminun except block. Do I NEED POWER STEERING? What is the best way to go? Need to start buying front end parts, I was going to buy new steer box, flaming river. Thanks mac I bought the engine from a friend. It is a cj, I bored it 40 over , standard crank, edelbrock alum heads, performer intake, edelbrock water pump, still have to buy the carb, c6 tranny , 2500 stall converter, 389 posi 9 inch rearend. So if I buy a rebuilt powersteering unit it will eventually leak? Anybody have ant idea how much hp and torque I will have? ive got the edelbrock performer rpm cam.

I can't imagine that with all of that weight up front that you wouldn't want PS.

I ran my 67 fb with a 427 back in the 80's without P/S, wasn't hard to steer except when sitting still. Mine had iron heads, aluminum 2x4 intake, battery in the trunk ( the last 2 years I had it) There's little spare room in the engine bay, P/S just adds to the clutter, not to mention you have one more thing to worry about leaking.

D-- You are right. It isn't IF it'll leak, it's WHEN it leaks. I hadn't thought about the clutter factor. I guess if you are packing a 427 in there, you, most likely, aren't making a go to the grocery store car!

That's a big ol' engine. Bet the car would spin the tires.

You're right about the leak, I've never seen a P/S Ford that didn't leak somewhere. As for the tire spinning bet, that's one bet I know not to take. Spin the tires? NOT! Light em up on demand is more like it. Mine was so bad that I couldn't pass a little old lady doing 45 mph on a 2 lane when it was raining Everytime I'd try to pass her and ease on the gas, it would just spin. And you had to be extra careful about turning a corner and nailing the gas, it wasn't hard to do a 180 in the middle of the street, my brother did just that once

I've noticed with my car (ok it's a 4 cylinder that weighs practically nothing but it has manual steering and 205 tyres) that once you get moving it doesn't matter whether you have power or not, even at parking-lot speeds. It takes a little to force the wheel in a lot, but I've learnt to not try to make the tyres scrub, just keep pressure on the wheel and they'll turn as you start moving. Once you're on the street, changing lanes and turning around corners doesn't require much turning, plus you're going fast enough for it to be effortless.

My car is a little smaller and it probably weighs 1000lb less than a BB stang, so I understand parking would be more of a PITA. But having PS just for parking lot comfort seems a waste, even if it is nice.

I have PS on my 429. It does add clutter but it isn't too bad. The leak is really frustrating though. And BB power is awesome...no need for bolt-ons, like nitrous (but it might be fun to try once)..

I like m/s, P/S is something that is nice to have, but if you don't have the money like me to get all the parts needed then I would stay with M/S. What is wrong with a little work. Also, why would you take this in a parking lot or grocery store? If you do, park far far away from any other cars if you cant handle it. But then there are the people that park next to you no matter how far away you park.
