67 Mustang Coupe

I just purchased a 67 Mustang Coupe project. I got it for $350 with no motor. The guy gave me a C4 transmission and he also gave me the shift linkage for a 4 speed toploader. It is an original 289 car. There is all new frame rails in the front, along with the sheetmetal and new floorpans. The problem is, he welded all this stuff to a rusty firewall :notnice: . So I have to cut all this out and weld in a new firewall. I am just getting kind of burned out on the project and thinking of how much money it is going to take. I am a high school student and I don't exactly have alot of money. Should I give up and look for something better later, or should I dig in on this project and just keep working little by little? Your opinion is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the 67-coupe club. Having said that you are starting to see why a lot of the people on here that have been there and done that will say save and buy the best car you can. It appears to be very attractive to buy a Rustang and then fix it up. That is a lot of work and you can very easily spend more money in the repairs to get it to level that you could have just bought a car and the time you have spent would have you finished and driving it. Having said that you have to make up your mind because only you know what your situation is. Good luck and happy stanging if not now then in the future.

it all depends on what you can and are willing to devote to the project financially and time wise. A car for $350 is hard to pass up period. Depending on what parts are on the car you could part it out on ebay and make some money. Take my 68 coupe for example. I bought it from a friend for $500, but it was a complete car. It had some of the regular mustang issues but nothing major. Because my initial investment wasn't much I wasn't afraid to experiment and try things with it that I had never done before. You have to learn someplace and its easier to swallow a $350 dollar f'up than a $2-3-4000 one.

I also bought a 68 shell for $200. It had some parts I needed, the unibody was shot. I took what I needed and sold the rest in pieces. I probably made $1000 on that car not counting the parts I kept.

I have seen many cars for sale for $2-3000 that need more serious work than my car. How complete is the car? If you fixed the firewall and dropped in a new motor would it be driveable? You are in high school, I don't know what you do for money, but chances are you don't have tons. Don't get bogged down trying to build a high dollar hot rod. Fix the car, learn from it, drive it and enjoy it.

How much of the firewall is rusted? Can you post pics? welding a new firewall in isn't really that big of a deal if you have a welder. It can't be all bad if the PO welded new metal to it in the first place.

(sorry for the ramble, it's late. My thoughts are much better organized in the morning)
