Hi I have 67 Mustang Coupe, and I want to do the granada front disk swap. I like to know what exactly all the parts I need and what are the positives and negatives of doing the swap. I have 14" rims will I have to buy new rims if I do the swap? And I have heard of bump steer problems is this true? Will I have to get my car aligned after I finish the swap? And is it worth doing to my car ? I also heard about the scarebird system, Can I get some more information on the scarebird swap, is this swap reliable and good and what are the positives and negatives of this scrabird swap. How do this screbird system work? Would my stocked rims work on this kit? Is there any driving symptoms that could occur if I choose to install the scarebird system? What are all the parts I need to do the swap ? With all the honesty in the world if you had the choice of picking from the granada swap or the scarebird swap which would YOU pick and why? I really dont have the money to get one of those really expensive conversion kits so I really appreciate all your help. EVERYONES OPINIONS ARE WELCOME!!!

Hi,
I did the Granada conversion on my '65. Regretted it since. The steering went from manageable to the crazy side to side stuff. Even after three alignments. The Granada will not work with 14inch rims, need at least 15 inch. Rod and Custom makes a good kit that bolts directly onto your '67 spindles, and it's around 500 bucks. By the time I tracked down all the parts and a special tie rod coupler for power steering my Granada setup cost me over 700 bucks. Don't know about the scarebird stuff, this winter I'm going with rack and pinion with the coilover conversion.
There are a lot better kits out there than the Granada, do a search of the forum, there is a lot of Granada info. Just wish I had it two years ago.

I don't know if you have lowered upper A-arms and/or shorter front coil springs, but if you do, this is a big reason why you would have the problems you desrcibe with the car wandering all over the place. If you do not have these mods, the alignment is most likely the problem.

The alignment specs for a '65/'66 Mustang isn't correct with Granada front discs/spindles. The settings should be; 0 to .5 neg. camber and 2.5 deg. pos. caster with 1/8" toe in.

I would have the shop adjust the front end to these specs and see how the car behaves afterwards before dropping more money on some other setup that you may not need if this will correct your problems.

The problems you're experiencing with the Granada setup on your '65/'66 model is not a problem when installing the Granada front discs on a '67-'70 model. The (wider) track width and front end geometry is the same on the '67-'70s as the '75-'80 Granadas, but it's not the same on the '65/'66 models.

The Ackerman angles are different between the '65/'66 spindles and the Granada (and '67-'70 Mustang) spindles. The Granada spindles will work on the '65/'66 model Mustangs, but the alignment must be adjusted for the spindles being used. Lowering the '65/'66 models with Granada spindles only increases the negative effects of bumpsteer.

But, lowering a '67-'70 Mustang with Granada spindles is no problem, since as I mentioned, they have the same suspension width and design as the Granadas.

'65 Granada conversion

Thanks for the alignment specs, it was set to the '65 standards. Not the ones you have listed. I have not lowered the front end, everything I read said this was bad for this conversion so I kept it stock. Even so the steering went to crap and the tires are singing (definitely alignment related). I ordered the TCP manual rack setup, planned to do it all along and hope it will help. Lools like the TCP rack has the same alignment specs you listed for the Granada.

Thanks Ultrastang, Mike

Bump steer made worse by discs is a phenmonon unique to putting 67+ Ford spindles and discs on a 65-66. After 67 all spindle geometry is the same. A new granada setup from degins is $560. If you change the spindles, you'll need an alignment. It is absolutley worth it; ride in a front drum car thats getting flogged in a rainstorm and the resulting epiphany ought to be convincing enough.

The scarebird swap comes in a flavor that fits under 14s and one that fits under 15s. It uses brackets that bolt to the stock spindles. You buy the instructions and brackets from him and buy the rest of the parts from somewhere like autozone. It costs about $375 said and done.

That said, as much as you've mentioned COST, I'd go with scarebird. Heck, I'd probably go scarebird anyway. It's cheap, it works, no compromises to speak of, straight bolt on, tons of pads are available for the calipers he uses, replacement parts are cheap and easy to get. I'm going scarebird, piece by piece, since my car isnt exactly roadworthy yet, and I'm an utterly broke college student. :D

I dont like Rod & Customs kit, it's very similar to one of Scarebird's setups, and they used all the same parts IIRC. The difference is the R&C kit required some cutting and clearancing where Scarebirds didn't (bracket design differences AFAIK), and scarebirds was/is cheaper.

Edit: Oh snap, its about time I shut up and order the scarebird brackets eh? :D

I will agree, there are better ways to get disks on a classic these days than the granada swap. Once upon a time you could get granada parts for nothing....I mean 40-50 for everything at the most. You could also get them in every junkyard. You also had no other options other than finding original mustang stuff. The aftermarket setups and some of these "user made" setups are really good.
