I have a 67' coupe and when i push the accelorator pedal, the car sticks in a high rpm. I'm having problems troubleshooting what could be the cause. Any help is appreciated

the actual pedal doesn't stick, and i'm not sure that it has to do with the linkage or the linkage spring because everything seems to work as it should, i've found thats its all traced to the carb, as the butterfly valve stays open and doesn't completely close shut after letting off of the gas pedal.

well the primary butterflies are not supposed to completely shut. How much open are they? What is the car doing exactly? Your posts so far are very vague.

well i press the pedal and the rmps go up, but when i release the pedal the rpms stay high and the pedal comes back. We popped the hood and the springs and everything come back but the valve stays open, also, when you hit the gas quickly, the carb gasps for fuel, almost as if theres too much air. I've tried adjusting a ton of things on the carbs, all the adjustable screws and such, but have had no luck. Also, i've been lookin for a fuel filter, but can't seem to find one on my inline 6...i've traced the fuel line from the gas tank all the way to the fuel pump and haven't found anything, my brother seems to think that maybe its inside the fuel tank, but i'm not too sure. All help is appreciated.

i'm running a single barrel autolite on it...its the stock one as most of my parts under the hood are stock besides the alternator and some of the suspension and steering components.

Did you say that the throttle plate stays open after the pedal comes back down ? If so, then I would beat you have a faulty throttle shaft. In that case, I would get a new carb. Have you tried replacing the power valve ?

alright, well i installed a new carb, and now i fired the car up, it idles great, accelerates awesome, but i'm having a problem now with the car shutting down, i turn the ignition off and the car tries to continue running while the ignition is in the off position...what should ido?

Sounds like maybe a timing issue. Either that, or check your ignition switch. Awhile back, I would turn off the car and take out the key, and the car would still be on :) lol. I had to replace the ignition switch, anything fine now.

well, i checked out the ignition and it seems to be a motor problem...what i did was started the car, unhook the alternator wire and the car ultimately died, but still sputtered before actually turning off which leads me to believe that its mechanical. Any ideas of what i might be looking for?
