I'm selling my current mustang for a classic and I've seemed to narrow down my search to 67's and 68's. Now, the reason for this post is that I'm open to the idea of doing a I6 to V8 swap. Now, I've searched all through this site for information on this, and most of what I find deals with the conversion for 65's and 66's.

Several posts I've read said that 67+, the only difference between the I6 and V8 (asside from the obvious motor) is the rear-end, front springs, spindles and brakes. Am I missing anything here?

I ask this because as I plan this car, these are pieces I will eventually swap out to modernize the car. So, if I already plan on doing this and there isn't anything else, why not expand the universe of cars I'm considering by also looking at the I6's and then convert them?

Your input is greatly appreciated.

Oh, one other side comment. I have some 18x9.5 2000 Cobra R's that I was going to put on the back of whatever classic I buy. Backspacing on this is just over 6"...something like 6.18 (don't remember exactly). Will I run into fitment problems with an 8", 8.8" or 9" on a 67 or 68? I know they're way to big in the front...I've found some replica versions of them in smaller sizes. I looked at the tire/wheel fitment chart and didn't see anything quite like these on that chart.

Again, thanks!

I know I forgot to put the rest of the thread title on this thread, but come on. I'm not looking for a big long discussion on anything...or really anything too detailed. I'm really only asking two simple questions...did I leave anything off the basic list of what needs replaced for an I6 to V8 in a 67+ model year and will I have any tire/wheel fitment problems in the rear with the 18x9.5's off my current Mustang I'm selling?

I'll eventually find out the answers to these questions...but it would be nice to know what I'm getting into before I actually buy a vehicle.

Thanks.

There are a few advantages to the 68 over the 67. Two that stand out for me after my 67 I6 swap are motor mounts and steering column. The motor mounts are different than any others. 67 frame mounts are the only year that will work. It is easy to use others, but you must redrill one of the holes. If you know it going in, it is a big plus. If you end up with a 67, pm me and I'll give you more info. The other thing is the steering column. 67 uses 64-66 style long shaft steering box. No big deal unless you get into a big front end wreck or want to remove and replace it.

Thanks.

I'll keep that in mind. I'll be sure to contact you if I do go that route. I should know within the next few weeks, because that's my time frame for buying one.

Have a good day.

The long column issue is for early '67's, later ones had collapseable columns with a rag joint.
The '68's had a few more safety features (padded consoles, side marker lights, more plastic and less metal inside, different steering wheel), but I like the '67s myself (helps that I have one).
I didn't see transmission on your list but that may have to change too, but I'm guessing you knew that already.

I started out with an I6 in my '68 coupe and did a V8 conversion on it. As you say, for a performance application you're going to be replacing the drivetrain, springs, brakes etc anyhow so it's not much more work than starting with a V8.

I'm running 17x8" wheels with 4.5" backspacing and have plenty of room betwen the tire and the inner wheelwell if that's any help to you. This is with a stock width '68 9" rear...
