Progress Thread 67coupe’s 89 LX - Dyno Vid

Not much accomplished this week. I’m waiting on the upgraded intercooler before installing the whipple and finally installing the drivetrain.

While the main harness was out, I wanted to eliminate the unused ABS connector and wiring. So I cut it open and got to work. And 5 hours later.

After that, installed just about everything I could back into the engine bay.

Intercooler gets here Tuesday. Hopefully I’ll have the drivetrain back in and the car moble again next weekend.
 
Spent some time yesterday prepping for future events. Wanted to go ahead and get the parts ready for the next paint session.

Taped and covered the top sides of the hood and hatch. Also, started cleaning, degreasing and prep of the undersides.

Then pulled the lower intake and factory Eaton off.

This setup has 3 gaskets and four o rings (intake to head, supercharger to lower intake, intercooler manifold gasket and orings). After searching online all day and calling the local parts stores, I was forced to order gaskets through the local ford dealer. Unfortunately, they are the only source that can get them here before the weekend. At least they cut me some kind of deal on them.

Whipple install is now potentially Wed night. Still hopefully to have the engine back in the car, running, and have the car movable this weeeknd.
 
Lots to update. Will be in multiple posts due to five pic limitation.

Removed the stock intercooler from the Eaton to compare the internals against the Whipple.

Main difference is the rotor pack. The Eaton has three lobe rotors vs the Whipple’s four. The rotors on the Whipple also have more twist along their length.

Then bolted up the new intercooler.

The water inlets are completely open and unobstructed, unlike the stock intercooler. The new one is also almost a half inch wider. Hopefully this eliminates the anoying heat soak of the stock setup.

Then finally bolted the Whipple and lower intake back onto the engine. Note the massive single blade throttle body.

Then started the long tedious process of squeezing this thing back into the engine bay.

The motor has to be moved as far forward as possible so the drivers side valve cover clears the steering shaft. Then it has to be angled so the passenger side header clears the frame rail. Then you can finally line up the k member bolts and send it home.

After that’s done, it’s all time to connect all the wiring and plumbing. Remote mount oil filter, P/S cooler, hydro boost, heat exchanger, radiator, both reservoirs, intercooler pump.

Then filled it with fluids, loaded the start tune and turned the key. Fired right up, no issues, burped the fluids and let it warm up.

After some quick snaps of the throttle, this thing is going to be a beast!

Then put the front suspension back on pulled it outside for the first time in its new color.

The color in this light really shows why I was drawn to it. It almost has copper look in lower light sources. The car at work with this cooler looked awesome in late afternoon sunlight. Color is BMW Sakhir Orange for those wondering.


Finally have it out of the shop and back in the garage.

The whipple design actually creates boost, the eaton stacks air against the intake and creates boost through back pressure so to speak.. the difference will be night and day.

Yep. I think that’s the whole roots vs twin screw design.

This won’t be pullied for much more boost. Eaton was at 13-14. This will be at 14-15, but will make 70 to 80 more hp due to the efficiencies of the Whipple.

Another long day, but more progress.

Under side of hood is done, which means the hood is now finished. Doors and hatch are done too (top side and jams).

Next up is fenders spoiler and one of the bumpers. Then cobra kit the remaining bumper and I’m done!


I painted my GT last year, they have a TON of parts. A lot of prepping! Color looks fantastic!
