3,000 mi. ago (2 Yrs) I had the rear end (8") rebuilt in my 68 289. Had 3:1 w/ Auburn L/S installed at competent shop. I drew the oil out today (3,000 mi since overhaul) to change it and found it had a LOT of fine metal flake swirling in the oil. I can't see the gears to inspect them because there is no rear cover on the diff to take off. How worried should I be? Have the shop take it apart for insp? No worries? This thing is my baby, though my kids disagree. Thanks. Tom

assuming its not clunking or making any weird noises, you're probably ok. The new parts and the auburn posi will make for some shavings, not really a problem though. In fact, what your seeing might just be the zinc or graphite stuff thats mixed in with the oil. To be safe, drain the fluid, pour in some new, and call it good. I'm not sure if the auburn requires any friction modifier or not, so you'll want to find out if it requires any special additives.
