Our shop has inherited a project.

A 1999 Explorer 5.0 in a 69 Mustang- MAF, AOD, not electronic transmission.

Everything's in place except for wiring. How best to proceed?

We found a place that will customize the harness and computer for $1500, just wanted to check and see if this was a common swap and what you might recommend.

What harness, what ecu, what sensors, etc?

Thanks,
Vic

$1500 is alot of a harness!

I didn't realize they put 5.0's in the 99 explorers.

I guess this depends on what the customer wants. If he wants a performance ECU that he can tune, I'd suggest a megasquirt ECU. If he wants something that he can just use and forget about it, then the factory ECU should work fine.

They want use and forget. But...the Explorer harness feeds an AODE tranny and requires many sensor inputs that are not on a 69. Not doable IMO.

Would a harness from a pre-93 5.0 mustang work? No ABS, no AODE, no speed sensors etc...

Thanks

You would need the ECU from an older mustang as well.

I'm sure the newer ECU will work fine with the ABS and AODE stuff disconnected. But I don't know how it would react to not having the speed sensor.

I think you'd be better off using an ECU and harness from an older mustang.

you can't use a Fox Body or even an SN95 harness because they're based on TFI ignitions (IE - the use a distributor).

correct me if i'm wrong, but all the explorer 5.0s use distributor-less ignition.

i think your best bet is going to either add a distributor and run a Fox harness and computer, or run some sort of standalone computer (which doesn't sound like an option).

You are correct. I forgot to mention it. Someone added a TFI distributor, that's another reason why we're leaning towards a fox mustang harness from 87-93.

Or you could just carb it. The AOD doesn't need anything but the cable.

It being an AOD-E, it does need a computer to run it. I believe you can get a seperate controller for the AOD-E though. I forget what the controller is called, but it will also allow you to switch between performance mode or economy mode and I think it is also programable. You might even be able to manually shift with it, but I can't remember.

If you used that you could use an '89-'93 mustang harness and computer for the motor. After you swap in a distributor ofcourse. You will also have to change the oil pan and a couple other things if I remember correctly. It wouldn't be a bad idea to swap the cam also since it has a "truck" cam.

I'd leave that "truck" cam alone. It's better than you think. Just a step below the Stang's cam in duration. Lift, can be increased to equal the Stang's specs just by adding 1.7 rockers. Duration figures for the F4TE "truck" cam are 256/266 ( int/exh), lift with 1.7 rockers is .448/.473 ( int/exh) I've run this cam with ported E7's and 1.7 rockers, fed with a Holley 600VS on a Ford A321 intake and it was a pure pleasure to drive, especially with a 4 speed. :nice:
