my buddy is offering me a pair for free, they are ported with 650 lift springs on them, 3 angle valve job. Are these heads worth strapping on the 331? they went 11.08 on a 289 in a 2800lb car

Probably not the ideal heads for a 331, but if you don't have to spend much on them, they are worth a shot.

They may have a smaller chamber than most other stock heads, which will give you some compression. If they have larger valves and are ported, they are probably as good as a stock head will ever be.

they are second best to only the gt40p heads! before u bolt them on they should feature a c9 casting number for 69!

should be a 58 cc chamber instead of the stock one million cc soup bowl chamber. id say go for it and see how she runs. maybe do a little gasket matching and bowl work

cc for 69 351 car heads was 60.4cc's not 58.

but cc it, because it could have been milled. If you have flat tops on your 331 that CR is not going to be very pump gas friendly.

Make sure it has be converted from rail rockers (screw in studs and guid plates)

you can make a lot of power with those heads if the work done on them is right.

Before you do anything measue and calculate everything out so you know what you are getting yourself into. Let me know if you have any questions, I know a fair amout about these heads

yeah i know the guy who did the work on them and he is really good. Yes they have screw in studs and guide plates....YES the pistons are flat tops but i dont need it to be pump gas friendly. Do the heads have bores in the front of them so i could screw my late model accessory brackets in them?

Boy do the "69 Windsor heads" bring back memories of the "bad old days"!
You know, back when the early Windsor heads were the best a Ford guy could hope for in an inline valve head! You know, the days BEFORE 25 choices of aftermarket heads, in BOTH aluminum and iron!

To answer your questions: The heads should have the holes for the later model accesory drive.
Yes they will make good HP if the port job was good, addressing the shortcomings of the stock ports. A lot of guys went real fast "back in the day" on modified stock stuff! I personally would not waste my time & money on modifying stock heads with the present availability of great aftermarket pieces but since you got these for free{!} , GO FOR IT! The 2.02 valves and probable milled high compression would work good on a high revving engine like a 331 should be.
One potential problem, if my memory serves me correctly there may be some coolant passage differences and I think the early Windsor heads had an extra bolt or two at the corners of the intake. Plugging holes and creative gasket use can solve these issues though.
Make it happen! The price is right!

uhhh i thought the heads were direct bolt ons....i have never heard anything about extra coolant passages until now! Everyone is telling me they will make good power but im real curious what everyone considers good power?

Not extra coolant passags, extra intake bolt holes.

The coolant passages should all line up fine...(I got a set of D0OE heads (1970) and they have noraml coolant passages, mabe internal differances) and noraml number of head bolts.I ahve heard of some heads being of a "8" bolt design (8 bolts to hold down the intake rather than 6),but havent sense one my self.

Oh,and to answer your other question the TFS TW out preform the 69s heads in all asspects...

Once again I'm relying on my memory, but I think '69 Windsor heads were a direct bolt-on as we used to put them on 289s and 302s a lot. Where the coolant passage is a perfect square on all 302-289 heads, the passage of the '69 Windsor heads are L shaped but still fit within the square of the later model heads. The part of the Windsor head coolant passage that is solid has the threaded hole for the "extra" 4 bolt holes that I speak of. I think the solution is to use the '69 Windsor intake gaskets, just toss the too long end pieces and use silicone like you usually do anyway. You'll be able to figure it out when you see the difference I'm telling you about.
Oh yeah, don't forget about the special "big headed" head bolts needed to bolt the larger bolt hole 351W heads to a 302 block too. Lots of companies make them.

Gonna be run TEA ported TFS R heads.

But,I did have TFS Track Heats on our 357,with fair sized hyd. roller cam (intake was a Vic. Jr and BG 750 carb).

Went 7.0's (1/8) on a 150hp shot plate

Better C4 (Im sure I told you guys about the POS C4 we had) and a tune it would have gone 6.80-70's with no problem.
