a guy was asking me about my car yesterday as i was leaving work and while we were talking he mentioned he had a set of 69 windsor heads that he would trade me for a new holley carb from my work..i heard from a few people that 69 windsor heads are apparently the best head to put on a 289 or 302 without going up to an aluminum aftermarket set..anyone ever put a set on a 289? and is there any way to identify them so i can make sure im actually getting a set of 69 windsor heads?

The castings are D0OE or sometimes ya find C9OE's. They respond to port matching, and exhaust relief. Definately old school, aluminum heads with 58cc chambers & 1.94-1.60's are much better, but for a long time the D0OE's were the best windsor head to get.

i figure i if they are the D0OE's in good shape i might as well trade since i'll be able to talk my manager into giving me the carb for $200 so im thinking thats a pretty reasonable price for a set of heads

I've got 351windsor heads on my 289 and for a low displacement engine, it screams. The heads were totally reworked including porting and polishing, roller rockers, springs, rods, etc... All this was done prior to my owning the car and I think that new alum heads would have probably been as good/better performance for the same or possibly less $$. That being said I wouldn't change anything at this point.

I had a set on a 289 with 12.7:1 pistons (I figure about 11.5:1) and a small solid roller cam with a Offy 360 dual top tunnel ram. Put a Jerico behind it and slapped it into a '69 Mach I weighing about 3000# and ran 11.08 @ 119 as it's fastest time. 5.67 gears and 9x30 slicks.
