my steering coloume is too short, i was told that i could pull it out like a shock or something like that, how hard would that be, and how long wold that take? do i have to take the entire coloume out or what.
The 71 - 73 Mustang does have a collaspable steering column. The shaft that connects to the steering box slides in and out. I just finished replacing the column seal on the firewall of my car. Before I reinstalled it , I removed the shaft (By simply pulling it out) and greased it with some light lithium grease then put it back in the column. To get the proper length I attached the shaft back to the steering box then pulled back on the column until it lined up with the mounting studs under the dash. It took me about an Hour to take out and put back in.
an update, i got the new rag-joint in and got the shaft extended, it fits really nice, i had to use a 1-1/4" wrench to pry it down, it was very tight, now i see why the mecanic that did it last didnt do it, i mean after all its 32 years old, its bound to be stiff, the bad part about my sterring, is that i have a power steering leak somewhere, any ideas on how to find it so i know what i have to replace?
The first thing to do about the leak is to check the lines. If the leak is from a line it's a simple bolt a new one in type fix. If the leak is comming from a seal in the gearbox, The first thing I would do is try a seal renewer additive (power steering stop leak). You can find different brands at most any auto parts stores. I like JB and Lucas brands. If it's comming from the pump you can also use the power steering stop leak but a replacement pump would be the best. Hope this info is helpful.
