Don't worry this is not another thread asking if it can be done. I would rather not weld anything to the frame of my car. Couldnt I just cut/grind everything off my axle housing and weld a set of leaf spring mounts to the 8.8? I love the idea of discs and a locker back there since I can get an 8.8 so cheap. Am I missing something here, cant this be easily done? Thanks for your time.

Check out my site at

and its on page 6 or 7. I can answer any questions that you have in more detail if you need.

Good luck and I love having the 8.8 there... was done on the cheap as well.

Red5oh the car looks great so far. Your install went in beautifully. I do have a couple of questions for you, are you putting discs on the rear? I think you can adapt cobra discs back there but im not sure, I was hoping you would know. Also where did you get your spring perches? (i'm sure my local parts store will not have them) I did a quick search and didn't find any around. Thanks a lot for the info, hopefully I can get started this weekend.

I think the install was relatively easy! It was just a bit of time.

I am not putting the discs on the rear at this time. I have almost used my entire donor car and I swapped the m/c, booster, etc from the fox body and that was setup as a disc/drum car. I might do it later once the car is completed, and they make a ton of low cost kits to put discs on the rear of an 8.8. I just do not want to increase the track width.

I got the spring perches at summit... pn is DCC-4120074, you can also use the MOR-85090 (which is a Moroso brand, this is the one I used). The fit on the tube great and welded just fine.

If there is anything else you need... ask away.

I'm thinking about seeing if I can get a SN95 8.8 cheap since they already have discs on them and will fit my bullit wheels without spacers. College budget is a little tight these days. I dont know much about brake setups, so can i just use a proportioning valve with my existing m/c or do you think I should put on a SN95 m/c with booster? I have have manual drums that suck a$$.

I will probably put mustang steves 13'' disc conversion in the future. So I'm guessing I'll go with the sn95 setup. I do like the prices of the fox setup better however.

Red5oh,

What are the U-bolts from?
That's the last thing I need to pick up to get this project rolling.

Thanks,

Scott

Scott,

I got them as a kit from mustangs plus. I just told them it was an 8.8 with the 3" tubes and they were right. I ordered the whole kit (4 1/2 mid eye springs, performance shackels with poly bushings, new U bolts, all new hardware and rear sway bar) I can look up the pn when I get home tonight.

Good luck,

Mark

If you go disc/disc, you will need a m/c and prop valve that are for that application. I do not know if you can reuse a disc/drum m/c with a new prop valve... maybe someone on here will tell us.

I agree that manual drums suck.. I would consider them dangerous to drive, that is how much I hated them. When I got my car... I drove it around the block ONCE, then parked it and started disassembly. I didnt think it was going to stop that once. Since then I have driven it with the new power disc brakes and it is great!

Thanks for the info, unfortunately...

My tubes are 2-7/8" O.D., not 3". The rear came from an 89 GT. Not sure if they changed or what. It's becoming enough of a PITA that I may pick up another rear end after insuring the tubes are 3".

Thanks again,

Scott

I wouldnt worry about 2 7/8 vs 3". Thats only .063 on a side... not too much to weld up. Just get the 3" perches and you will be good.

Perches are the easy part

All ready picked them up, and have no problem welding it all up.

It's finding Ubolts that fit snug (i.e. correct) for a 2-7/8" axle tube. That is the dificult part. 3" Ubolts are way too big. It doesn't sound like much, but 1/8" makes a huge difference on how they fit.

Only paid $50.00 for the axle housing. May just toss it and get another rear end with 3" tubes. Or if I have the time, I'll build up the tubes to 3" at the mounting points.
Just a PITA when you are working in your garage, rather than a full on shop.
Thanks,

Scott

I was just looking at mustangs plus and they listed a u-bolt set for a 2 3/4 tube, that is a little closer... I am sure someone out there makes a set for it.

I completely understand about working out of your garage... mine has been entirely built that way too...

Also, I had one of their catalogs at work, and they listed more dimensions in there.

You might also want to call Mustang Depot (I think its Jay) and they should have some knowledge on where to find them also....
