Folks,

I know it's tough to diagnose some problems over the internet, but I need some input on a problem I've got, hopefully from someone who's "been there, done that".

I've got an '03 GT HT, just under 11K miles, 5 speed. It has subframe connectors, Eibach Pro Kit springs, speedcal and FRPP 4.10 gears. It has 17X9 Bullitts with 245's all around (brand new Michelins). I drive the car to work a day or two a week, and while I'd bet there's no carbon buildup on the pistons, I sure don't beat on it hard at all.

I had the gears (used) put in about 2 months ago. It was done by a local shop with a very good reputation, and I've never heard anyone say their skills weren't top-notch. About 2 weeks after the gears went in, I began to feel something like a "bind" or "groan" when accellerating from a dead stop, and turning left. It only happened when the car was totally warmed up, say after driving 10 miles or so. This is just normal, everyday type driving, not laying into it. I wrote it off to some gravel or whatever on the road, and getting used to the gears. Well, it only got more noticeable. I could feel it more than hear it, because most times I had the window up most of the way. As it got worse, I would put my window down, and could swear I'd heard a metal-on-metal contact sound, similar to when a brake pad is worn down to nothing but metal, and it rides on the rotor.

I took the car back to where the gears went in, and asked them to take a look at it. They pulled the cover, checked the tires for contact areas, checked the torque on all the differential bolts, and just about everything else in the rear, and said they couldn't find anything wrong. They refilled it with fresh fluid, and did put in the additive. The weather turned bad, so I didn't drive the car much after that. Now that the warm weather is back, I've been putting more miles on it, and the binding/groan is getting worse and worse. I had both windows down today, and that metal-on-metal sound is even on the passenger side, when I make a right turn from a stop.

This is happening now both pulling forward and turning, and backing up and turning. I can't afford the bucks to let this rear grenade itself, so there must be something that's been overlooked. Thoughts? Opinions? Anything would be really appreciated.

I have 2 sugestions:1)rear control arms rubbing on the sway bar. how the bar got bent is beyond me but it should be real easy to check.
2)The front struts. With subframe connectors frame noise is transfered to all parts of the car and it might sound like it's coming form the back. It COULD be the metal sleeve on the top half of the strut rubbing on something which would explain why it makes noise when the car shifts weight.

Red2000GT,

Thanks for the thoughts. The subframe connectors just went in when I had it back in the shop to check it out. They did have the rear shocks totally disconnected, to make it easier to move the car body up/down, but I know the control arms were never removed or looked at other than ensuring that the bolts were snugged down properly...

I had the same problem about 6 months after my gear install, once the car was warm, and I started from a stand still while makeing a left or right turn I would hear a bad grinding sound my rear(it wasent because I just ate Taco Bell  ) sorry couldn't resist. After talking to some people I changed the dif fluid and added 2 friction modifiers, 200 miles later the noise was gone :D . I know you said you had fluid changed, but your problem sound just like the one I had and that did the trick, hope that helps.

UPDATE: I dropped the car off Tuesday night at the shop where the gears were put in. I talked to the tech about what I as hearing/feeling, and that it sounded like the clutches in the Trac Loc were either going or gone. He pulled it apart yesterday, and ended up swapping out the entire assembly. Got it back last night, and put about 20 miles of hard driving in it to get everything warmed up, including quite a few sharp turns from a stop; quiet as smooth as can be. So, fingers crossed, but it seems the Trac Loc was the problem...

Thanks very much for the responses!
