How much Hp can an 8.8 rear end handle with after market axles? I'm hoping to push 500 to the rear wheels with my 5.0 and I was told to go with an aftermarket 9 inch from moser or strange. The 8.8 would be cheaper but will it handle 500Hp?

You can run about 2500hp through an 8.8 if it's got quality parts in it. There are guys running 8 second quarter miles with them.

No need for an aftermarket 9" for the power you are wanting.

A tight and well built 8.8 with a 31 spline trac-lock from an F150/Explorer or cobra along with 31 spline aftermarket hardened axles will hold the power you want plus much more and would be the cheapest route to take.

I wouldn't even waste the money on a 31 spline setup. A 28 spline setup will hold that kind of power with no problems. If you don't put slicks on it, and just drive it on the street, you don't need to do anything at all. Just leave it the way it is.

I agree a 28 spline setup will hold his power level too, but most keep adding power and eventually will need something stronger...lol

That being said, my motor puts down about 500 to the wheels and I have a 28 spline setup and run slicks. The trac-lock clutch packs are very tight, Moser 28 spline hardened axles, and a bearing cap support cover. It's been like that for 6-7 years and many 5000rpm clutch dumps (Spec stage 3) and 1.6 60'

Just get some 28 spline hardened axles and rebuild the locker. Moser, Strange or reliable brand. You don't need a 31 spline carrier. I've had the same 28 spline hardened Moser axles in my car for 12 years now. That's multiple 6000 rpm launches on slicks, and 1.6 short times. I'm putting about 500hp and 630 ft.lbs of torque to the wheels. I never even rebuilt the stock locker, although I must admit, it's now due.

Thanks for posting this. A bunch of people on Vintage Mustang Forums have been wondering this since 8.8 swaps are becoming popular.

Remember, the vintage look is drum brakes. Don't drive up the price of the ones with disk brakes any more than they already are.

Did the 8.8 swap on my 67 as well; threw on some Cobra (technically, "Bullitt") discs while I was at it.

How's VMF doing? I haven't been on there much since bob sold it. Seemed like it changed quite a bit the last time I was on.

Tough call I just went through this myself. If ur going to buy 31 spine stuff is just go 33 if u might ever have more power. I decided to just stick with my setup with just over 500rwhp and drag radial which consists of welded tubes sang 31s and 03 cobra diff with strange c clips eliminators. If I ever need more I guess ill worry about it then but even with my setup people are running low 9s with sticky tires and getting away with it.
