How much can the 8.8 handle HP and torque wise? Kinda pondering a big block swap next year.

Rick91gt ran 740 RWT all season long a year or so ago on a stock 8.8.

depends on tires. if you run slicks you can tear up an 8.8 with minor bolt ons.

an 8.8 properly prepared 8.8 with the tubes welded and a girdle can handle over 1000 hp so you really shouldnt have to swap it. also the 8.8 is a much more efficient rearend then a 9 inch.

like mentioned above run a gridle, weld the tubes get c-clip eliminators and it should hold up for a while if you invest in good componets

Hey whats up Sgt. I'm a fellow airman Stationed down at Tyndall. I've been running my 8.8 over 350 HP for a while. I did the DnD T-56 Swap and haven't had a single problem from it. I hope to push more than 400 by the end of the year in my convertable 87.

A properly built 8.8 can hold plenty of torque.

How much are you planning on having?

What type of driving will you be doing with it? Mostly street? Mostly track?

Once I get the Fogger hooked up,Ill let you know .

Im runing an 8.8 with a Eaton,a 28 spline set-up at that.

Its all race stuff thou(axles dont even have a c-clip provision),and I got a gridle. So it should hold out.

If not,a 9" isnt to hard to get in.

I'm not aware of them pushing your wheels out at all, not in my experience anyway. Why would they?

I know with my Strange setup the ends of the axle tubes had to be cut (per instructions), but I didn't even think they'd bolt back together without doing that if that's what you're thinking.

Couldn't agree with you more. I beat the **** out of my old 100% stock 8.8 with my old combo (~350 hp).

Well, right now I have 31 spline Moser axles and an Eaton, I can get a girdle, but I dont know what the welding the tubes is... weld the tubes to diff housing?

I was looking a getting a 408(530hp/530tq) from Ford Performance Solutions but I see that the 533(630hp/675tq) is the same price ($6999). These are long blocks, only thing not included is a carb and distributor. I have nothing set in stone since I dont know how much money I'll have next spring but I am getting at least a 408. The 533 just seems insanely huge and I couldn't run a C4 trans. I guess the good thing would be I wouldn't have to worry about nitrous or boost...(at least at first, hehe)

It would probably be 70% Track / 30% Street.

You sound like you are off to a good start.

Yes, welding the tubes refers to welding the axle tubes to the differential housing. With track use launching on slicks can cause the axle tubes to "twist". This is not good. Getting them welded prevents the axle tubes from "twisting".

Also you will want to have the torque boxes reienforced and welded along with some chassis stiffening items welded in as well (ie. subframe connectors, roll cage.)

Good Luck with your plans.

Yes, I have subframes, I know I'll need an 8pt cage to race at the track, I think it's 11.5 and faster? Good call on the torque box, I have to buy some reinforcement.

I must have been lookin at a diff set i dont think they required cutting the tubes, i think they bolted on the ends and pushed the wheels out the thickness of the machined eliminator piece, if that makes sense, IM going to look into the strange setup sounds like that would work. Thank you 89mustang.

You just basically cut the end off so it is flush with the larger part of the tube (you will know what I mean). Then they bolt on and you're ready to go.
