i have a 65_289 with a 8" rear. i plan to get my engine up to 350HP+. i want posi but i dont know if the 8" can stang that much power? if it can what do i need to do? or should i get a 9" posi. ?
well 350+ is a broad number my friend. you can buy bullet proof 8 inch "traction locks" (posi = chevy). make your mind up as far as how much power you want. no sense in buying a 8 and making power to bust it then have to turn around and buy a 9
ok, i decided to go with a 9"...but do i have to buy one that came out of a 1965 mustang or can i get one from other cars? if so, what year and car? ....thankz
You want a 9" housing for your car. For the 3rd member(center section) a 9" is a 9", they'll all fit into a 9" housing. There's a guy on ebay that makes 9" housings for 65/66 Mustangs, sell for $300.
NO, right now i have a 8" rear but I decided to get a full 9" rear w/ POSI. what i want to know know is, what cars can I pull them from? or, do I have to get one that came off a 65 stang....

Other rear ends will work (1967-70 Mustang), but might require different wheel offsets to compensate for the longer flange to flange distance (depends on your setup).
All have the same housing except the passenger car uses the smaller axle flanges with Mustang 8" stye bearings. You could install either the 28 spline Mustang axles you already have or upgrade to the 31 spline 65/66 axles as they are a bolt-in.
The Ranchero and Wagon use the larger bearing and are the best units to find.
