Sometime during the Clinton Administration I did an R-134a conversion on my '87 LX. R-134a conversions weren't quite the spectacular events then that they apparently are today. We just took off the compressor, drained the oil out of it, put in back in place, pumped it down, popped on a charging adapter, and refilled with PAG oil and R-134a.
Other than being slightly less cold than it used to be, it's behaved pretty much in exactly the same way it did when it was charged with R-12, including needing to be topped off every three or four years.
Today when I tried to top it off, it wouldn't take a charge. The compressor cycles on for a second or two, cycles off for ten seconds or so, and repeats the process. It's always been this way when it was low, so I jumped the low pressure switch and the compressor stays on. It still won't draw any Freon, though.
Before I go to a shop and hear, "Oh, you got here just in time" followed by the sound of a ringing cash register, I thought I'd just try replacing the charging adapter, in case the Schrader valve is stuck or clogged. Does anybody know if the 5.0 uses a 1/4" or a 3/16" port?
