im running 87 octane gas right now. only becuase the gas prices are off the wall. but i want to start putting premium in just so the motor runs healther. husky by my house has 91 and 94 octane! would 94 make a noticable difference in my car other than the popping and farting? i have few mods.

right, if the car does not ping/detonate/pre-ignite the mixture on 87 octane, there is no reason whatsoever to run higher octane (it will actually decrease performance and increase emissions, all else being equal).

if one has to go to higher octane fuel to compensate for detonation from increased ignition advance, i think it is a wash.
the higher the octane, the less volatile the fuel is. so timing advance + needing higher octane = basic wash.

my line of thinking is that one can bump the timing as much as is safe, for whatever grade of fuel one runs. if pinging occurs, back timing down rather than increasing octane.

that is just how i look at it.
