87 Engine Swap

I'm using my 87 mustang for the donor engine and transmission. I'm just wondering what electronics I'm going to need in order to pull the motor, put it into a different car and get it running again. What wires do I need to remove in order to get the engine out?

What is it going in ? Fuel injected or carbed ? Automatic or stick ? Years ? All this info matters a lot as far as what you need and what you don't.

You don't need any electronics if you do carb. You will have too change the distributor to a vacuum advance along with the intake. If going efi you need the computer and the whole computer harness. Make sure to label all the grounds and connectors. I'm sure someone can chime in with a diagram. Take the starter solenoid off with wires attached if possible. Basically, you need everything connected to the harness that runs from the computer through the firewall. You also need the wires that run to the trans tunnel and through the dash harness and the sensors connected to it. With a wiring schematic you can figure out how to power the computer and get the motor running.

If I just take out the entire computer and harness, then put it into my car as a whole, and hook power up too it, it should work right? I know its not as easy as it sounds though

Jrichker is the man if you get in a jam. ( He doesn't give a fish...he teaches how to fish )Its a mess of spaghetti but not too bad. Once the computer is powered up it depends on good grounds to run the sensors. Having a complete car is a plus. Its almost as easy as it sounds. Good luck man. Sounds like a nice project.

The Gotcha will be getting the stock Galaxy water temp and oil pressure gauges to wire up correctly.

Here's some diagram help for 87 engine. The diagram shown below points out the basic electrical hookup except for the very important power ground for the computer..
