at the flywheel I am making 500 HP and 497 ft. lbs of torque. Due to the tranny and other stuff I am lossing about 40 HP by the time it gets to the rear. So I estimate in the end I will have about 450 HP to the rear maybe more after a dyno tune. But even more importantly is that ~4600 ft. lbs. of torque will be hitting the rearend. I have been doing the math and have come to these conclusions. I could get a rearend from a yard for about 100 but most likely the whole 3rd member and axles will have to be replaced as well as it will not come with the pinion support or disc brakes. When you add up all the parts it comes out to almost the same as the currie unit plus I would have to build it myself or have someone else build it for an additional cost. I think I will just end up buying it complete from currie. Atleast I will also have the satisfaction of knowing it will never break and it is being put together by professionals.

Yes, I agree with your logic. Also, I bet you get some kind of warranty. So if something is defective, Currie will fix it. If you do it yourself and mess it up, tough. I would probably end up with the junkyard route, but if I had the money, the credit card would be whipped out...

D. Hearne - I was told that whithout the pinion support it can break at 450 HP.

Who told you that? Currie? I ran a Std run of the mill carrier behind both a 390 and later a 427 without ever breaking one. This included multiple trips to the dragstrip. The 427 was putting out 500+ hp. Now the guy who bought it from me, destroyed it by subjecting the rear to a set of slicks, and a button clutch, but he also left the 2.50 ratio gears in there too. I believe if he had swapped the gears, the rear and the Toploader 4 speed would have survived. It's not the hp rating that breaks things, it's the sudden application of too much torque with sticky tires that usually does it. I know a guy who breaks 9 inch rears with a junkyard 302 pushing 250 hp at the max.

Ferf - how do you like the Wilwoods?

I bought the rear-end like 2 years ago and it is still sitting in the box that Currie shipped it in Hopefully, I'll have the car finished by the end of this summer. I am also running Wilwoods up front.

BTW...the engine I am looking at is a 351 rated at 470 HP and 470 ft/lbs of torque

later,

Chris

I think it was implied when they said 450 HP. Atleast that is how I took it. I was assuming he meant that with the amount of torque a 450 HP motor with 3.73 gears would be putting out it would be enough to break it with a pair of slicks. SLICKS is the key here I think.

62 inches is too wide for a Stang. 56in. for the 65-66. 58 inches is right for a 67-70

62 is too wide I know. But that's were I am hoping the rims I have will compensate. You guys run around 5 in backspace right ? I have 15x10 with 7 in of backspace on the car right now. It tucks nicely. It takes a small, small spacer though. So I figure I can throw away the spacers, and run the same rims, no ?

I think you will be able to. moves some of the mass out a bit too, might give more stable car? Then again, it's probably a tiny effect.

You have to remember that Currie is in the business of SELLING you a rearend , and the MORE stuff they add to it, the MORE $$$ they make. I see lots of guys pay big bucks for stuff they don't really need. I don't have the kind of big $$$ to throw around, so I tend to look toward buying only what's needed or a more economical solution when it comes to choosing parts. It's your money, if you want all the bells and whistles, then go for it, I just don't think you really need them.
