90' GT Deck Installation

I have a 1990 GT, and I bought a Sony X-Plod deck with built in amp and CD player. It also came with 2 speakers that I'm gunna put in the rear. I have pulled the old deck out, and Im trying to wire it in. I need a wiring diagram if anyone has one, that would be great. I read somewhere that there is a built in AMP and I need to bypass it with new wires to the speakers?? Do I need to do that, or can I just wire it up to the old harness? thanks!

ummmmm what might be a good investment is to go to your local parts store an ask for a harness that just plugs right into your exsisting one. It only takes maybe 5 mins. to wire up the new deck, since the harness is color coded. just figured i would throw that out since i dont know of a diagram...

Futureshop told me I need to pay $48 for the regular installation, and about $60 in parts!!! But my dad went there, and they said only $48 to install the system... so I dont know who to believe. Maybe I'll just go there, give em $48, and hope they can do it. lol

It's not hard at all to install a stereo in a Mustang -- if you're really unsure, order the wiring harness and mounting kit from Crutchfield and they'll even include a step-by-step instruction sheet for the Mustang with pictures and everything.

Otherwise, give it a shot and we can help if you run into trouble.

Some of them have the Ford amp, some don't. I know the older ones do, my wifes '89 did, my '91 did not. Depends on whether or not your car came with the "premium" sound system. (what a joke) It does have to be bypassed, and I honestly don't remember how we did it; but either way you will want the Ford wiring harness adaptor. When I was in car audio, we sold the good ones for $20, that was a few years ago. the faceplate adaptor is about $15, if you need one. If you aren't replacing the stock head unit you shouldn't need it, otherwise it's good to have.

yeah, its got the "premium" sound. lol, i think i'll just bring it in, cuz I really know nothing about wiring. My dad gave it a shot, and now we cant even get power to the new deck. Might have blown a fuse... Any idea which fuse we would've blown installing the new deck?? thanks!

The wiring really shouldn't be an issue -- as long as you still have the plugs on the factory harness and you bought the adapter harness it's just a matter of matching up the colors.

It sounds like you probably blew a fuse -- I wouldn't give up, just replace it and recheck everything.

usually the fuse in the back of the radio is the one that blows, if not the fuse # is 6 20AMP. being an ex audio installer i would definitely recommend a adapter harness, much easier. if you have a factory amp it should be under the passenger side seat. maybe that will help you some

ALright guys, I took your advice, and ive got the rear speakers installed and working. Just took the door panels off and looked at the wires. Ive got Blue/Orange for the left front, and White/Green for the right front. Any idea which of those is positive and which is negative? that would help a lot!

Doesn't matter, as long as you do them the same on both sides. You can see they are different where they plug into the factory speakers.

Any idea which ones are the same? I'd put my money on Blue and Green/White and Orange... but I cant check right now because its pissing rain out...
