Electrical 90 LX 5.0 Temperature Gauge goes down on start

My temp gauge starts at the low end of the indicator with no ignition. When I start the car the temperature gauge shoots down, completely out of sight. I changed the sender, does the same thing. is this an open circuit? not sure where to go from here.

check your grounds

The grounds on the instrument cluster? If so, where are they?

Check the ground strap from the head to the firewall and the 2ndary ground behind the battery.
