Well to start off this is my girlfriends car it is a 91 mustang 5.0 automatic...It was originally a 4cyl. and someone swapped in a 5.0 and an auto trans. She doesnt know what the hell they came out of ad we really have no info on the car,as far as i can tell it is a AOD trans and the motor is carburated.Heres the problem someone micky moused the detent cable and it is held on by wire ties an appears to be the wrong one the car runs mint but will not shift out of first i checked the fluid and it is level and red(no smell) and i'm not sure if or when the filter was changed.I dont know too much about mustangs and am wondering if this is a common problem I've seen alot on the net about them not shifting out of 1st.ANy info you can give to point me in the right direction is appreciated.THANKS !!!!

Don't like the sound of that........if the TV cable is not adjusted properly, you can wreck an AOD pretty quickly.

How long has she had it ? Did it drive normally at one time? NKau is right about the TV cable. If it's not adjusted correctly the trans will not live very long.

Put the car in 1st and see if it shifts. It could have a reverse valve body.

TV cable is what controls the AOD. Basically it runs the throttle valve inside the valve body which ultimately determines line pressure that corresponds to the amount of throttle being given which is why it is very important that the movement between the throttle cable and the TV cable needs to be linear. The AOD doesn't use a kickdown cable or vacuum modulator and has no computer controller all input is based on this single cable and engine rpm.

**From the sounds of it you just need the correct linkage setup for your carb to set the TV cable up right but its hard to tell how much damage is already done from running like that.

Lokar makes the only kit that i know of to correctly connect a AOD to a carb.( KD-2AODHT) there may be others. I believe no matter how you set it up the TV and accel cables need to move the same all the time.
Maybe this link can help explain? http://www.shockley.net/Holley-AOD.asp

well i replaced the cable and had one of the techs at work adjust it, I also replaced the throttle bracket thinking the micky mouse job they did installing the cables my be the problem and i even replaced the trans filter cause the pan was dented thinking it may not be getting fluid,BUT it was a failed attempt the trans is shot i got nothing again...but i have a buddy with a AOD out of a lincoln mark series so ima replace the trans and hope for the best...Wish me luck!!

Good luck to ya, just be careful to note the difference in the lincoln and mustang aod if there is any. For some reason I'm thinking the TV linkage is upside down but that could be crown vics someone that knows the answer correct me

I feel your pain. I went through same problem with 4 cyl conversion. I had my AOD built at a local shop and the guy told me every clutch in the trans was gone. The shifter is different, you will need a V8 shifter.

The other thing to check is the length of the tail housing / output shaft. I am pretty sure it is longer in a lincoln.
