Hey guys. I have a 92 LX with a 5.0 in it and a T5 tranny. It is pretty much all stock except for no A/C, hurst shifter, and underdrive pullies. I get this horrible vibration in the shifter if I am over 85 mph or so in 5th gear or if I rev it out to 5000 rpm or so in any gear. It is so bad it almost vibrates my hand off of the shifter and I cant make a clean shift sometimes. Any idea what this vibration could be from? I was thinking driveshaft or maybe the hurst shifter that the guy that owned the car befor me put in it. It is one of those long handled Hurst shifters and I have always owned Pro 5.0's or Steeda Tri-ax shifters before. Any other ideas? thanks in advance.

check all the rubber mounts on the motor and transmission for wear, cracks, loose or broken bolts ect...and replace if needed thats a good place to start and post results...

Does it do it when the transmission is in neutral ? If it is just when it is in gear, i would guess the driveshaft, especially at such a high RPM. If it does it in neutral, you probably have other problems.

I would check your transmission mount, and your drive shaft.

Check the balancer, I had a bad vibration that went away with a new balancer.

Yeah, check the driveshaft. After changing to an aluminum driveshaft, the bolts had worked themselves loose even after using loctite. I cleaned the threads & retightened them once more with loctite and it was fine.

It didn't say whether or not you still had the stock drive shaft in there so I am going to assume you do. Has it been removed and reinstalled since you've owned it?

As an aside, aftermarket shifters will also have a little more vibration than the stock pieces as they eliminate the rubber dampener inbetween the handle and the shifter base.

Vibration and noise at that speed and rpm are normal with a t5. The t5s were mated to engines that were meant to be shifted at 5200 rpms. you are at the top of the rpm band. also keep in mind that if you are using the stock gauges from your 92 stang they were very inaccurate at higher rpms. So you might be at closer to 6000 rpms than 5000.

Since it consistantly happens at 5000 rpm no matter what gear your in I would say it's in your motor. This happened to me once and it turned out to be a bad spark plug. So check your plugs, wires, cap and rotor, then balancer, then pressure plate.

If your taking it to 5000rpm in any gear Im assuming you have gears? If so get yourself an aluminum drive shaft. Happens to most 5.0's after a gear installation.

no t5 vibrations are normal. I shift mine at 6k and it's smooth and crisp.

Well I have been messing around with it and its really only bad at 85 mph and in 5th gear. After 85 it only gets worse the faster you go. If you push the clutch in it does not go away so I am leaning towards the driveshaft. I got under the car and checked the 4 bolts that bolt the driveshaft to the pumpkin and they seem to be tight. I also visually inspected the u joints and they seem to be ok but I can't tell for sure. I am going to pull the driveshaft and take a good close look at it.

i've got a similar vibration in my ttop coupe, but the engine and clutch are new....50 mph the shifter starts vibrating bad, as well as the car, but I push the clutch in, bring the rpm's down and vibration still exists, so I suspect the driveshaft too.....an alum unit should fix the problem.

Check your Ujoints! I had almost the same problem with vibrations but my 93 lx started vibrating really bad around 70-75mph clutch engaged or disengaged. I replaced the ujoints and the vibrations disapeared.

Did your U joints look ok or did they look like they needed to be replaced. Mine look ok as far as I can tell but maybe they are causing it to be out of balance for some reason.
