92' Twin Turbo 300zx

My buddy just got a car. He used to have an 86' turbo 300 zx and it was pretty slow but now he has this car.....he is implying that it is gonna beat my car.....


Now, i NEED to find out some info on these cars..... How fast are they stock, and more importantly, how easy are they to make fast?

they are ok speed wise, but they take a lot to get them right...

I would not have even considered it a race - does his car have major mods? Does he know what's under your hood?

Some years back I would have picked one of those up had I found the right one. I think they were pretty neat cars back in the day.

I don't have specific numbers - I'm sure others will be more than helpful with specs.

I might be missing the boat but I'd tell him not to eat before you race because you're going to hand him his lunch.

fwiw the cars have the same power, diff times are prolly diff drvers/tracks

he knows whats done to my car, but he thinks you can add a boost controller and turn up the boost....i was wondering to what extent.

Its basically stock with no cats, BUT its a factory twin turbo car with 300 hp stock....i was wondering what it has in it.

He can up the boost somewhat...fuel will become an issue if upped too much (or at least it should become and issue). I have seen a few around local here, one was a solid 13.9 stock and one ran low 13's I want to say 13.2-13.1 with a boost controler exh., filter, and maybe a tune- its been awhile. The bottom ends are fairly stout for what they are.

I for one think they are cool cars, they still look nice for how old they are...like supras kinda.

true, to an extent. the stock turbo's only flow a certain amount before youre running them past their efficiency range and theyre just hot air. plus the more air you add, the more fuel you need, and i dont know how stout their fuel system is.

besides, the 300zx TT's are even less reliable than a DSM, so you guys wont be racing anytime soon, nor will he get past the 350 mark without figuring out first how "not fun" it is to work on these cars.

though i love them almost as much as DSM's, if i could find one in nice shape it make for a fun DD, i dont think id go too crazy with the mods, maybe a boost controller and upp it a bit but within safe levels (or until i need more fuel), standard bolt ons, a awesome sounding exhaust, suspension and rims/tires.

I think their pretty cool. My boss had one, 32 year old blonde chick. Pretty hot little car and driver.

You can take him. But I wouldn't take it lightly especially if he is a good stick driver. I'd watch out for traction problems.

thanks for the pic...yea those are a nice looking car..i have never auctually seen one first hand tho sorry.. your mustang looks great and in your video you got it sounds like a beast i wouldn't be to worried

We are currently swapping motors into one since the thermostat fried and killed a rod bearing. Very difficult to work on. But when even lightly modded are Not exactly cars to be taken lightly. The car we are working on was only lightly modded with boost controller, fueling, exhaust... ie. just little bolt ons and was fast.

The stock Garret t-3 turbos turbos on that car are more than enough to make 400plus wheel. The weak link on that car is the internals. To much boost = boom (14 lbs is about the limit before you start worrying)... i do believe they are are running hypercrap pistons (could be wrong on that one... but something in the rotating assembly is crap). But as with any factory TWIN turbo car... very easy to pump up the power.

Not saying GreenMustangGt has anything to worry about... just that these cars are VERY capable... good luck.

thanks guys. this is exactly the info i wanted. Today he called me up to tell me his boost gauge hit 15 psi and was still climbing.... maby it has some other mods like a boost controller.

I know right now it has no cats..... and what appears to be 2 aftermarket bovs twords the front.

I also dident know that they had rear-wheel steering.

ANyway, i would HATE to work on one of those.....the engine bay is litterally PACKed....i mean, you cant see turbos, exhaust, even spark plugs...but thanks for the info guys.

Also, my t-5 is still holding up great, but i dont expect it too last too long.

I told him that me might make me buy a MP T-70 single and 3 or 4 explorer motors lol.

working in them is the pits... To replace the turbo's you mght as well remove the motor.... stupid.

The one we have right now took us 2 1/2 days to drop the motor and transmission and get it stripped to a short block. (It was my 1st time doing a motor drop on a Z car).
While its out the turbos are being replaced with GT28R's... should make for an interesting ride...lol.
