93 Cobra Motor

Also, check which MAF and computer are in teh car. With the cobra stuff, the 24lb injectors are not calibrated at the meter but rather at the computer. If you have the stock GT comp then you have an aftermarket MAF. Otherwise, you'll have to be carefull if you ever decide to change MAFs.

Well....

GT-40 Heads
Cobra Intake
1.7:1 Roller Rockers
Different roller cam (the same used with the MN12 Thunderbirds/Cougars) which actually sucks to tell you the truth.
24lb/hr injectors
65mm Throttle Body
70MM MAF
Different less aggressive computer.

The pistons are the same hypereutectic slugs we all hate.

These engines have potential, but are begging for a cam and computer swap.

....Hows that for starters?

It does have a b303 motorsport cam in it.
Well, I was never a fan of the Alphabet cams, but it's better than what came in there stock. I would recommend advancing it 4* though.

Are you sure this is a Cobra engine, or are you just taking the guys word for it? The reason I ask, is that if I was going to build or replace an engine, there are a lot more cost effective and powerful building options than the Cobra mill to do it with.

You got any pics?...I'd be willing to bet it isn't an actual 93 Cobra motor...

Just for your info...the Cobra motor puts about 265-270hp at the motor even though it is rated at 235hp...

It probably just has a Cobra intake on it...

Welcome to the board :nice:

Yeah, the 93-95 Cobras really put out about 260-270HP.

Seems every week, someone has a Mustang with a real "Cobra" motor in it. With all these wrecked Cobras, i wonder how there are any left.

Easy way to tell if it's a true Cobra motor.

Valve covers are STAMPED black covers, not cast aluminum gray covers.

The heater return pipe is lacking the nipple for the coolant hose that normally goes to the EGR spacer on a normal 5.0 motor. This peice is unique to the Cobra (and i beleive later explorers).

Cobra's also have blue 24# injectors.

Of course, any 5.0 HO motor could be upgraded to Cobra-spec easily. The parts are readily available, nothinbg special really. 11 years later, the aftermarket has better parts anyway.

I heard that from some other people about the 265hp on the cobra, but I didnt know it if was true. where did you that info from???
Because those parts make about 280+hp on a regular 5.0L HO. The only reason the Cobra doesn't make more is because of the Crappy cam and computer it has. The standard 5.0L HO's are acutally better in that respect.

My car has a real Cobra motor.....lol.

Easy way to tell are the valve covers and heads. Cobra cam with cast iron GT-40s. Also check for the blue 24lbs injectors. I called SVT once to see what my car was actually putting out for power. The guy laughed a said he could one say what was advertised. But he said to take what the GT-40 crate puts out which is 315 plus what the car is advertised at which is 235 and average it and you get 275 HP.

Cobra motors had 24lb/hr injectors....which are lt blue if I remember correctly. Sounds like it's a stock HO with some Cobra parts. Not a bad thing, but if he's asking top dollar for it because he says it's a "True" Cobra mill, tell him a dozen guys on Stangnet tell him he's full of $hit!

Well The injectors are orange which are 19# I believe. Cast Iron GT 40s on it.

Yeah the Cobra comes with 24lb injectors (light blue)...that isn't no Cobra motor...show him this thread if he trys to tell you otherwise...print it off for him :nice:

So you confirmed that they are the iron gt40s? by looking for the markings?

Good Luck

Now here's another twist.....if he lied about that part of the engine, how do we know what the rest of it's like? For instance, the Cobra engine has 1.7 roller rockers. Without pulling the valve covers, you're not going to be able to tell if this one does or not. Do you trust this guy enough to take his word for it that it? The cam is not big loss, because the Cobra cams sucked to begin with, but the rest of it is pretty useful. I’d hate to pay top dollar for a Cobra engine (even a home built one) to find out that it’s only half there.

And FYI….19lb/hr injectors would not flow enough fuel for a supercharged Cobra engine. So either he’s A) trying to snow you or B) and idiot and got snowed himself and how he’s trying to recoup his losses by passing it off to another sucker.

If I were you, I’d treat it like a 5.0L with bolt-ons. If you’re set on buying it, then pay him the price of a regular ’93 5.0L HO short block, then tack on the additional cost of the Cobra goods that you can see (GT-40 Heads, Cobra Intake, 65mm Throttle body, and 70mm Mass Air Meter). Forget about the cost of the “B”cam and 1.7 roller rockers (if they even exist) because even if he isn’t lying, the fact that he knows nothing of the engine shows that you can’t take his word for it that they’re even there.

Well I bought the car a few weeks ago. Its got 100,000 miles saleen ground effects, racecraft susp. 17 x 9 cobras new t-5 and ram clutch, and new set of 3:73s. I pd 4700 for it so its not like i paid xtra money for the motor. Im not sure how rough the stock cobra cam idles but my car idles pretty rough. Im just wondering why my car has a boost guage and the guy I bought it from had a vortech v-1 on his 91 convt.and yes it does have the cast iron gt 40 heads
