So i have an 88 5.0 with underdrive pulleys, and i am noticing some problems with my charging system (dim lights, erratic voltmeter reading, low battery charge, etc.). A friend of mine told me that he replaced his alternator with one from a 94-95 model, which is 130 amp vs. the 75 amp that i have. He claims this fixed the similar problems he was having with his car, and that he had to modify the bracket and change some of the wiring. Has anyone done this, and if so, what were the modifications needed.

I have looked for some of the higher amp alternators for an 87-93 stang online, but most of those say that some bracket modification will be required. I get the feeling most of these are just 94-95 alternators resold at a higher price. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The alternator is known as the 3G and is rated at 130amps and yes it was available on the 94-95 mustang GT as well as other models. There are countless amounts of threads that covers this as well as a sticky at the top of the forum which explains the installation process. You can also use a 6G which came available in later Ford models. There is a large and small case 3G. The large will require some modification to the alternator bracket but no big deal. A dremel will cut away some of it so that it will fit nicely. Good luck.
