Hey everyone. My name's Adam and I'm usually in the Modular 4.6L forums but lately I've been kind of thinking about getting a 5.0 and I realized I'd prefer the SN95 5.0's because of bodystyle, improved suspensions, etc. What I'm wondering is how, stock for stock, a five-speed '94/95 GT compares with my current 'Stang, a five-speed '98 GT in terms of performance. I've only driven one '95, a GTS, that had a badly beat-up automatic tranny that never shifted right, so I can't use that as a reference. I know 5.0's are supposed to have more low-end torque, but less top-end that 4.6's. True? Any other significant differences? Thanks very much.

IIRC the 96-98 GT's ran mid to low 15's in the 1/4 mile stock, and the 94/95 ran high 14's. Theres also a lot bigger aftermarket out for the 5.0's and parts are usually cheaper.

100% stock vs 100% stock, they're very close in 1/4 mile performance. The 5.0 will feel a bit faster and torquier on the street due to the extra cubes. The 5.0 will respond much faster to easy mods because it came from Ford so choked up, there's a *lot* of room to improve.

Other than the engine & transmission, 94/95's and 96-98's are very much alike.

my fraternity brother has a 98 and I have a 95, both are mostly stock. we've run them on the street in front of the frat several times.. anyone in the worcester mass area could probly hear it, we're both running flowmasters :-) I'm up on him like 8-3 or something like that and I had only been drivin stick for 4 months at that point. The losses were mostly due to bad launching on my part... his car does seem to begin to pull on me at the end though. Somethin about an overhead cam or whatever, but who wants one of those anyway? You're also governed at 120mph, while I believe the 94-95s cut off at 6000? I'm not positive, I've never red lined it that far, I usually wuss out around 5500-5700.

If you're mostly stock, you're wasting your time at 5500 RPM, for maximum speed shift at 5200. 6000 RPM is for when you have heads/cam/intake.

really 5200, i usually shift at about 5500rpm.

the 96-98 sohc are dogs, ive raced one and beat hime by 5 cars, but i dont think he knew how to drive very good.

I have usually taken all 96-98 GTs i have raced but the 98s definatly have a little more spunk than the 96-97s. Stock for stock they are within a couple tenths of each other. But modded is definatly a different story.

I raced a 96-98 gt that had a blower. I don't know what psi it was at, but it had a nice exhaust w/dumps. Anyway, with the mods i have - which didn't really make the car significantly faster, i hung with him by about a car length. I actually had him on the takeoff even though I was spinning all the way through 1st gear. In second he got about half a car length, and in third his rear bumper was a car length in front of my front bumper. So I think the 5.0 is a better engine to mod.

Actually, no. Only GT's with 16" wheels from the factory were governed at 120. I have the 17" Aluminum wheels and I've gotten it past 130 before. BTW, Thank you everyone for your responses.

Dammn, I didn't think any of the Mustangs came with governors, I thought it just came down to how brave you were......

Mine doesn't have a govenor and I have 16's that came stock. All the way to 135.

But sell the 98 and get a 95 in good shape. You should have money left over to get a nice set a heads or intake that will put you ahead of a 4.6.

The 98 was a little bit faster than the 96-97, they were even rated with more power. a good friend had a 98 and we got the same mods done at the same time and it was always who messed up or spun to long who lost or it ended in a dead tie, at the track he got a 14.2 and I ran a 14.3. We would always do one mod before the other and run to see what we picked up and then run again to see if we were still even. He since has gone and got a 98 formula so no more comparo.

no mustangs came with a governer aslong as they came stock with Z or V rated tires, mine has seen 145 once or twice (too fast and before gear change)...but the 94-95 will be much faster then the 98, also the tranys are equaly strong, in the 4.6 the trany might last longer becuase of the lesser amount of lowend torque but i have a friend with a stock trany and 500rwhp in a 94, but it's realy about luck with any stock tranny....also if you sell the 98 get a 95 and then go buy the new trickflow kit and say hello to 300rwhp :)

Also do use my times to base off of....i can't lauch as you can see with slicks and a better drive it would be low 14's easy

Since everyone is talking about governors and speed, I was under the impression that the 95 Cobra had a max speed of approx. 140-145... Well, a long time ago, I wanted to see what it could do. I got it up to 155mph and only stopped there cause I realized it was way to damn fast!! My car is, by no means, heavily modded, so i dont understand. Anybody else notice this??

I wonder how fast i could really go??
