94/95 MAF - No Flange Required (pics)

I've found two ways to eliminate using a flange adapter when going to a 94/95 MAF.

Option 1 - Get your hands on a 93 Cobra MAF housing and swap in the 94/95 sensor. I've had both and made some measurements using telescoping gauges and calipers. They are as follows:

Inlet ID = 3.25 in. for both units
Outlet ID = 2.95 in. for both units

Sampling Tube ID = .395 in. for both units
Sampling Tube OD = .640 in. for both units

In both cases, the smallest ID I could measure was 2.90 in (74 mm), but it actually gets slightly smaller (70 mm I assume) but I couldn't get anything in there to measure it. Anyways, it's obvious that the center section and sampling tube section of these two units both use the same casting and I see no geometry that says a 94/95 sensor would not work. 93 Cobra housings often go real cheap on ebay because no one has a use for them. I imagine you could buy one cheaper then a flange adapter and have a much cleaner setup.

Option 2 - Machine away the flange. Since I have access to a machine shop I clamped my 94/95 unit to a rotary table and milled away. The only time consuming part was centering it on the table. I don't think the casting is a perfect circle (I could only get it within .014 in. using a dial indicator). Finished pics (after some quick sanding and paint) are below. Notice in the last pic I cleaned up the casting seem lines on the interior.

And incase anyone is making modifications or looking for couplers, the inlet OD is 3.50 in. and the outlet OD is 3.00 in.

most people take a hack saw and cut the flang off.. works like a charm then lol good idea though.. a MAF sensor straight from a cobra would work no problem.. as its also calibrated for 19#s.. the computer is whats calibrated for 24's

Ironman92GT - that's what I thought too about the 93 Cobra MAF, but it's actually not the case. Check out this link:

Basically, the transfer function in the 93 Cobra housing is close to what we GT'ers need, but the harder you get on the throttle the leaner it will get - not good! That's why I went through and did what I did with the measurements of each housing.

GT-Rich: so your saying the 93 cobra and the 94/95 MAF HOUSING is the same, its just the electronics that are different? I have a 94/95 maf sitting under my bed waiting to go in my car and I was going to order a flange for it.

I wonder what a machine shop would charge me to machine the flange off it like you did on yours.

Smokin91 - Yeap, I'm saying the inner dimensions of the Cobra and 94/95 housing are the same, but the 94/95 electronics (F2VF-12B579-AA or A1A) are what you need when using a Ford 70mm MAF with stock 19lb/hr injectors. I believe the Thunderbird SC's also came with 70mm housings like the 93 Cobras, so you could try that too.

I have no clue what a machine shop would charge - it's no more than an hour of labor if you know what your doing.

I just took the housing to a local machine shop, it will be ready tomorrow. The best part is its only going to cost $30 canadian. WAY cheaper then any flange out there and looks a hell of alot cleaner too!

GT-RICH- thanks for the idea!

Smokin91 - glad someone liked the idea! And it saved you a few bones too.

As for the fins on the outside of mine, I just ground them all flush with the outside surface using a cutoff wheel, and finishing with a dremel tool.
You can see on the third pic down in my original post where one used to be on the side.

The guy at the machine shop is going to turn down the flange on a lathe, then mill off the outside parts that would get in the way of a tight seal with the airbox boot. Ill post some pics tomorrow when its done.

Did you notice any performance gain from going to the 70mm MAF from the 55mm one?
