I have a 95 Cobra with the stock type 17" wheels. They are black on the inside and inset parts of the "cutouts". Were any of them this way from the factory or is this done after the fact?

Also, they are kind of ratty, I wondered if a guy could get the clear coating off and polish them. Can this be done or am I smoking crack?

Thanks,
Shady

Nah dude, if they have black in the cut outs, they're 96-98 cobra wheels. Our year had a lighter grey instead. I bet you can have em polished too, I'd be interested to see what that'd look like.

you sure could have em polished...just gotta get that clear off and go for it...it might be a better idea to have em chromed though...its more durable and permanent...

i've taken "airplane paint remover", you can get it at an auto body store, to remove the clear coat. then take 1500 grit sand paper over them, then wet sand with 2000 grit. if the surface is really rough start with a lower grit paper. after youve used the 2000, polish out with mothers polish. i did this to a 89 corvette i had. the wheels looked great. any questions just give me a shout, i polish motorcycle frames, i can give you some more pointers.

Thanks for the info guys, so they are 96-98 wheels? Omigod, my perfectly stock Cobra is not perfectly stock! It's impure!

I feel so cheap and used.

Yeah if they're the dark grey they've been changed. IMO the dark centers look MUCH better, makes it look like it has thinner spokes and is a bigger rim than it actually is.

I think Ford used the dark inserts on the Indy Pace cars in 94 or 95. My cobra wheels have the gray inserts which I like better.
