The ECT sensor screws in to one of the metal heater hose lines that run across the top right-hand side of your engine. It's near the distributor at about the 10:00 o'clock position if you are looking at the distributor from the front of the car. (So, slightly to the left and slightly to the rear of the distributor as seen from the front.)

Unplug the electrical connector from the top of it, and unscrew the old one. Have the new one ready to screw on immediately, since some coolant may try to escape from the line when the old one comes off. The treads of new one should already be coated with some thick semi-hard sealant. This seals the treads so no coolant leaks past them.

Tighten new one down just snug with a wrench. Not too tight! It's a tapered tread body, so it never bottoms out.

That's about it.

Found the old ECT sensor in the original Ford Motorcraft box in my garage last night!

Here's the correct part number:

ECT sensor: F2AZ-12A648-A

PS) It is usually recommended that you clear the KAM (Keep Alive Memory) in the PCM (computer) whenever you change a sensor. To do that, you have to disconnect the negative terminal on your battery for about 5 to 10 minutes. That allows the memory to decay and clear any old settings or adaptive learning corrections that the computer has stored. The first five minutes or so of driving after clearing the KAM will be a bit funky, while the computer receives all the sensor signals again.

Completely hilarious is the fact that mine's been doing that for a while, and only lately has it gotten to be an EVERY morning thing, I was gonna mention it on here soon...

it seemed like the same thing last year when my PIP sensor went out, everyone's did at the same time....maybe ford has a giant computer and they do this to us for kicks

Guys,

I got mine at the Ford dealer, but others on this site have said they got them at an auto parts store.

If I remember right, it was either Auto Zone or Advance Auto.

Alright, just got the ECT sensor yesterday and I'm trying to put it in now. I just have one question. Is there a special way to remove the connector off of the old ECT?

For some reason I've never been able to get these type of connectors off and when I do, I forgot how I did it, lol.

So I am changing mine out today (finally) Hopefully this will work.

I will post results tomorrow when my engine gets cold enough to show the effects.

Another quick question about tightening it...if I over-tighten it will it cause anything to go wrong? I wouldnt think so, I would just be worried about the threads. Thanks guys!

mine will hesitate on a cold morning until 2-3 min of driving. i just give a little more gas while starting up so it doesnt die. after that it runs fine.

So it's you guys' ECT sensor huh?

I'm hoping that's my case, but my clutch is going bye bye too. I gotta clean my MAF as well. My gal' is HURTING in first, I'm talking sluggish, takes a few seconds to get going - I'm shifting later now after the few mods but each gear isn't catching dead on, my acceleration pedal is as loose as a Vegas showgirl, and the RPM's shoot up before the car does if I gun it.

Anyways I'll change the sensor just for luck I need another tune though.

i've changed my ECT twice. i changed it because my fan was not coming on when it was supposed to. now that my problem is solved (fan), my car still bogs down after it's started in the morning. it don't have to be cold either, it will do that in the summer. i don't think your problem will be solved by the ECT purchase. i think you will be wasting money even though its about 17 dollars plus taxes.

ECT did not work! Car still bogs although it didnt seem as bad, but the engine didnt get down to an overnight cold temperature. Anything else that it could be because this is my DD now and I can not constantly be having it bog out on me?

my car for the last month has not wanted to start when it was cold so i changed the ECT last week and that didnt help me out either. ive cleaned all the sensors and after that my cold idle is way too low and wants to bog like you say, im gonna try and find out if im getting the fuel pressure and vacuum now

Maybe its your ECT?

Your problem sounds like an ignition module going bad. I just got finished correcting that problem with mine. While cold it would fire up no problem. Once hot it began to give me trouble firing up.

Another sensor I haven't seen mentioned is the stator sensor located in the distributor. Very sensitive to heat and can cause backfiring and very poor idle when it goes bad.
