95 GT TROUBLES

I just bought a 95 GT vert with 170000 miles. It is only reaching about 4 grand when you hold the gas all the way down. It is like something is holding it back. Anyway this is the first Stang I have ever bought and I want it to be a good experience so please help.

First & foremost, if you have not, pull the codes. You can do this yourself if you have a tester, or you can use a paper clip. Parts stores will do it for you for free as well. Even if you do not have a check engine light, you can still have trouble codes.

BTW, does the car do this while sitting still and under load?

It does not do it while idling but when you are just trying to build up speed in any gear. How do you check the codes with a paper clip? I knew it possible to do this on Chevys but not Fords. It acts like it wants to jump up and run but just can't do it.

That first link shows you how to do it. Use a paper clip or jumper wire. That first pic shows you how to do it using a test light or volt meter.

Thanks I will try that tomorrow. Hey, Can it be the timing off a little? I just had a buddy drive it and he said it could be the timing or fuel filter. I figured I would replace the fuel filter regardless. I am doing a complete tune up on it anyway. You never know what the last person did or did not do.

A friends car did the same thing and I took the air meter out and cleaned with brake clean. The car would rev fine then.

Not an auto. Through all the gears though it will only go up to about 4 grand. This car has been terribly abused. It will require a lot of TLC.

Me 2.

One of the previous posters is referring to the MAF (mass air flow) meter. You can try that .... chances are, it needs to be cleaned anyway. If you have the stock air intake setup, it's inside the big round black thingy. Doing a search in the tech section would be really beneficial to you. Also, I would not use brake cleaner to clean it. Use rubbing alcohol & a q-tip, or electrical contact cleaner (they don't leave residue). And be careful, as the wires are really fragile.

Thanks man you have been a lot of help today. I have a pretty long to do list for tomorrow. I am off work all week and hope to have it running good by the weekend. I can't beat it I only gave $500.00 for the car and exterior wise it needs work on the two front fenders, new vert.top, and R wheels and tires.

Thanks for your help also as well as everybody else. Hopefully I will post good findings in the next few days. I hope to report that I have burnt the back tires clean off of it by Friday. I always wanted a Stang but never owned one till now. Never even owned a Ford product for that matter but so far I am happy with it.

Mass air meter. Just behind the air filter. It is notorious for getting buildup on the 2 sensor elements causing major problems. While you are at it, clean your IAT sensor as well. There are tons of writeups on these 2 items, do a search.

Secondly, you should check the cap/rotor for bad contacts. Put in new spark plugs and note/examine each of the old plugs. One plug may be fouled which points to a problem with that cylinder, so note which came out of which cylinder.

Check your timing too. Factory is 10* BTDC. Don't forget to pull the spout connector (to check timing) which is next to the MAF sensor. It's a grey plug you pull out.

No problem man. I've had a '94 & a '95, and both had problems when I got them. I came on here & the guys helped me out.

If you end up cleaning the MAF, checking the plugs & things Scott mentioned above, and doing your basic tune up stuff (especially replacing the fuel filter) .... and you still have the problem .... I'd definitely be checking the fuel system. You may need to get a good gauge to check the fuel pressure. You can just get one that mounts on the Schrader valve (on the fuel rail).
