hey guys, I tried to smog my car the other day and the smog shop couldn't find my egr solenoid. I've looked everwhere and can't find it. I don't know exactly what it looks like though and cant trace the wires unless I rip off all the conduit and that would be a huge mess. I ripped out the fender well because the smog shop told me it was in there, I found something that might be it but I don't want to mess with it and have it turn out not to be it. does anyone possibly have a picture or know if theres a port it can be checked from? I looked and comming out of one of the conduit tubes that goes into the passenger fender is a test port and I'm hoping thats for the egr solenoid but I'm not sure.

thanks in advance for any help, this is driving me crazy.

Third picture down

On a GT, the EGR solenoid should have a Brown/pink wire, and a red wire going to it. I'm not sure if it's different for a Cobra but I cant see why it would be.

Good luck.

Nope, no different. the 94 Cobra I cannibalized for my Cobra conversion had the same solenoids shown in that picture.

Pk89 5.0, what state are you in? Do they want to inspect the entire emissions system? Or is it possible they looked up the wrong information and are trying to find the emissions system for a 95-98 Cobra? Or a 95 V6?

And I thought that California's smog inspections were tough. But I've never had to show the EGR solenoid before when smogging my GT (which has the same emissions equipment as the Cobra).

thank you for the pictures.

I live in california and I think the reason why their so hard on it is because we only have to smog vehicles in my county on transfer of titles.

I dont know what they were trying to do but they came up with my cai was "completely Illegal" my pcv hose they took off because the hose was too big and they couldn't find the egr solenoid to test it.
If I fail this time I'm gonna go hostile from their bull****.

I found the pcv solenoid and I'm thinking about just leaving my fender well off and driving up there. just to be positive, is the solenoid the second thing in with the connector or is it the thing between the two smaller things with connectors(sorry about not knowing the actual names)

After a bit of research, the rule seems to be "if the part requires you to re-tune the computer for the part to work 'properly', then it needs a CARB number. Of course, you don't technically need a tune for all sorts of parts but the computer won't know about them and may not let the engine run well.

Here's a website that lists all CARB numbers (also called EO#'s) is here.

Most generic CAIs are supposed to be technically illegal. Enforcement is kind of subjective it seems.

I cant remember which solenoid is which. If you cannot confirm it via the wire color on the control wire, use a mitivac or your mouth to suck on the line [of the solenoid you think it is (remove the line from the solenoid and suck)]. You can hear and see the EGR open up when you have the correct one. It only takes about 6" hg of vac to partially open the EGR valve.

thank you for the website and all your help. I tried another forum and all I could find was pictures of egr solenoids that were not on the inside of fenders.

just curious what is the test port for that comes out of the fender by the MAF? if no one knows its not a big deal I was just thinking it might be for the egr solenoid but I cant trace the wires. I'm trying to make it so that I don't have to drive a half an hour up to the smog shop without the fender well in.

There is no test port that I know of. If you're talking about the SPOUT connector, it's simply a jumper to open or close the Ignition feedback circuit.

There's a picture of the SPOUT connector on this page
