well i have a small issue with heat in my car. i cant seem to locate the problem and was hoping maybe somebody has been down this road. i feel hot air coming from under the dash by my feet im not sure if its motor or maybe a strange heater problem..i can also feel a small bit coming from the vents even when they are closed...should i consider plugging the heater until winter?..if so how can this be done...88 lx 5.0 auto

it sounds like your heater is venting wrong

I would check the switch on the dash (the three knob A/C heater control) - my buddy's had some problems with that in the past. I don't know if i would just plug it, b/c then you've not fixed it, just 'fixed' it, ya know... and besides, I think you could do some research and fix it in just as little time as it would take to plug the vents.

It could be electrical, mechanical or even vaccum related - my bet is on electrical b/c that is fords achilles' heal.

If it's mechanical, unplug the reisistor pack behind the glovebox. Then the motor will only operate on high until you plug it back in.

If it's not mechanical, it's a leak somewhere. Hot air travels via thermal warming. As the air gets warm, it rises drawing in cool air. Usually the air "leaks" from the defrost vents, or panel vents. I've never seen it leak to the floor though as that's not exactly venting up.

heat

what i did was plug the heater until i can resovle the issue the air is still traveling threw the vents but it now only outside air temp instead of hot air from the coolant. The motor isnt on which leads me to believe that the air is being force fed threw the ducts by an outside source most likely the force of the air as a drive. but i dont know how to prevent the air from coming in nor do i know how its getting in. unless its forcing threw the cowl and then forcing out threw all of the vents?..is that even possiable?...thanks for the replys and info.

Yes it is. The air intake is underneath the cowl where the cowl vent is. As you drive, air can be pushed into here.

I assume you are getting airflow when the selector is in the OFF position??

Where does it come from? Floor mainly?

I'm thinking the flapper doors are not sealing properly when the selector moves.

Check the vacuum lines that go to the a/c-heat control knobs. Also there is a vacuum hose that runs along the top rear of the engine bay from the vacuum tree on drivers side marked "A/C" to the passenger side to a little vacuum manifold has total of three hoses going to it. I had to replace this hose because I was having air vent issues too. Check the hose for a hole.

Here I hope this is the problem.
First pic is tree on drivers side the hose I'm pointing at runs from here the the passenger side vacuum manifold in pic two. I just used a hose I had in scraps because ford no longer carries them, according to the dealer I went to.
