I have a 95' GT. It has a surging idle, pinging while accelerating, and it dies every once in a while. i can't for the life of me figure it out. I changed plugs, wires, cap, rotor, balancer, and it is still doing it. The car has 111,000 miles on it with no mods, all stock. Does anybody have any ideas what I should do to fix it. I have to take a road trip in it Sunday and I don't know if it will make it. Everybody says it is the timing chain has slipped a tooth but they said that about my 93' and when I tore it apart it had a stock double roller in it and was fine. The 93' was the MAF sensor. If you guys could please help me I will love you forever. Don't hate me for posting this cause this is the only place i trust foe figuring it out. Thank you.

Mine did something similar. Mine also was the maf. Did you try cleaning the maf? What about timing? Timing that is too far advanced will make it ping like crazy. Do you have loss of power?

how old is your IAC valve?

I mean I had surging and dying too, until the IAC valve went all together. I bought a new one and now my car idles steady and accelerates a little better. You'd be surprised how much trouble these little things cause. If you don't know what it is its the forward most thing screwed onto your TB. Just a suggestion.

I will clean the MAF. The messed up thing is, two weeks ago the car ran great. All this started all of a sudden.

Try pulling codes and see if the computer throws any at you. Your CEL doesn't need to be illuminated in order to have codes stored in the computer. If that doesn't get your issues cleared up, take a look at the Surging Idle Checklist from over on the Fox side of the 5.0 sections. It's written with the Fox Mustangs in mind, but essentially everything will carry over to the SN95.

i'm with StangGT on this one. you might have some codes that don't trigger the CEL.

I've checked everything but the codes. How do you check the codes on a 95' gt. It has a connector under the hood like my 93 and also has one on the drivers side under the dash like the 96. The car still surges from 1500 to 500 rpm and dies at stop lights. Also pings a lot. I have never changed the timing and now it is running at 18 degrees advanced.

Use the one under the hood. The one under the dash isn't connected to anything, it's just there because the V6 models were OBD II.

Check for a vacuum leak between the intake manafolds and between the lower and heads. I had a lead between my upper and lower intake manafolds that i wouldve never had found without some carb cleaner being sprayed at the seams. Fixed alot of problems i was having, which were pretty similar to the ones you described.

hey I'm new to stang but not to forums
my 95 5.0 5 speed was doing the same thing throwing codes 181 and 189.
mine had a k&n filter which cause contamination on the maf I put on a new paper filter and disconectedthe battery to reset the maf No more 181 and 189. if you still have the same codes show back up try to clean the maf with electronic cleaner (not carb cleaner, alacohol, acetone, thinner, etc.) spray only as to not damage sensor. good luck

Welcome desertcox05! I've had success using rubbing alcohol and q-tips, but it does require a gentle touch to not damage the MAF elements.

Your running 18* degrees advanced??? Is this with or without the spout connected? That is way to much timing, the 94-95 cars dont like timing as much as the fox's, I couldnt go any further than 12* on my old 95, and the cobra ran fine at 14* but It didnt like anymore. Start at 10* and adjust it 1* at a time to find where your car runs without pinging. I also agree with the Maf cleaning and the Iac cleaning.
