I have a 1996 gt 5sp It has 109.913 miles on the car. This is my question? is that too many miles to do a pi headswap. I have alot of mods already on the car but i want to run mid 13"s at the track i dont run it often at the track. but i want to run maybe once a month. do you guys thinl i should save and buy a new engine or what? thats alot of miles on this car also what about the transmission will it hold or will it break from racing once a month. I dont drive this car on a daily basis, but i dont want to break something. Help

Ryan (RysRed96GT) just did a headswap on his car, and I'm pretty sure he had 90k or so on his car. He said it runs like a champ now, but he probably still needs a tune.

As long as the motor is in good shape, and you get quality heads adn intake to put on it, you should be completely fine.

If you can find a 99+ crate motor for under 3 grand, I'd do that. Otherwise, if you trust your motor and its in good shape, throw the heads on there AND get a dyno tune

i've seen 02 explorer motors under 10k miles for uunder 1500 bucks. they are just like stock GT motors only they have an aluminum block :D (-82lbs)

except they are only 240 hp and have different cams.

Anyhow, I will be doing the headswap in 1 month and have 67,000 and will get a dyno tune. If you are really concerned get dished pistons to lower the compression or have the heads worked to lower compression.

Pretty much your call. In my opinion I would just get PI motor to swap in with the miles you have built up. I know these motors can build up lots of miles but for some extra money you can have a total fresher motor.

If you really only have 109.913 miles your car's really just about brand new & you shouldn't need to contemplate a head swap yet. :rlaugh:

I agree. However your engine can probably handle the swap with no problem.

Cams that come on PI heads are all the same. The difference is exahust, computer and the Super energy sucking Clutch fan bolted to the water pump.
i'll get the PN on the camshafts for the explorer and GT tommorow, they are the same.

swapping a motor is much easier than swapping a heads and pistons, or gutting your cumbustion chambers on your PI heads for the sake of a more friendly compression ratio.

it's good you are doing your own work for your headswap, If i had gotten a sweet deal on a pair of heads and intake i definatly would not have though twice about doing the swap at 70k miles, coupled with a dyno tune will show you copus amounts of newfound horsepower.
I personally would still do a headswap if I found a pair for around 250 bucks, I'm at 100k miles and my compression is beautiful
