i just bought 96 cobra and installed cold air intake and underdrive pulleys and thinking of headers h pipe and different gearing . looking for advice on what size gears to go to for daily driver.gas mileage is a concern, but would like more torque.what kind of difference should i expect from stock gears to 373s.also installing steeda triax quick throw, then flash tune.

I had 3.73's on my 5.0, so I decided to use them on the Cobra too. Big mistake. Go with 4.10's if you want the most bang for the buck. Mileage will suffer either way, but 4.10's will give you much better performance.

Last weekend our Cobra club made a 250-mile run. The stock-geared cars all claimed 25-26 mpg. The geared cars all got about 3 mpg less.

Gas mileage a concern and a 4V DOHC should not be together. It is a Mustang and a performing v8.

However, mileage will not suffer that bad. If anything it can go up around town. I average 22-24 mpg with my gears on the highway and can get around 270-300 to the tank around town.

These 4V's need gear!! 3.73's are a waste and not noticeable. If you are staying NA 4.30's minimum, blown you may want 4.10's.

I have a 97 cobra with 4.10s and love them if I were you I'd go with 4.10s and the gas mileage is not much different than stock . The place you will notice your mileage the most is if you drive interstate much but its still not that bad

also I would go with a X-pipe instead of a h-pipe it will sound alot better and they claim it gives your car more torque

DONT FEAR THE GEAR. I have an 01 Cobra with 4.30 gears and it is a rocket. Keeps up with the supercharged Cobras. I switched to a T56 so cruising on the freeways wasnt bad. Seat of the pants feel is frickin sweet.
You wont be sorry. I also have an 04 Cobra. The 04 is faster, but the 01 is quicker. DONT FEAR THE GEAR

I had a 97 Cobra with 3.73. I have a 96 Cobra with 4.10. I did have both these cars at the same time, and drove them back to back. Night and day difference. Even driving easy, you could tell the hug difference. Go with the4.10's. Who cares about mileage anymore anyways?

With a five speed and daily driving i'd go with 4:10's which is the combo I have. Mileage is about the same as I had with the 3:27's. I plan on doing a T56 swap in the spring and will see how the 4:10's are with 6th, I may change them out for 4:30's.

I have 3:73s in my 97. Despite what you may hear the car is night and day compared to the stock gears. Having said that however, if I were to do it over (and I may) I would go with 4:10s.
