so i am a mechanic at a busy shop in cali. i own a 1996 mustang gt. recently we had a 03 mach 1 in with a rod knock. their insurance company has paid for a new engine or at least a complete used one i should say. so this old 32v has a proud new owner. well i guess first thing is first i need a crank and ford wants over 1200 for it at my cost. does any one know where i could find one? second i know the engine will bolt in with some minor hoses and radiator changing. no big deal, but does anyone know what part of the harness i need to modify if any at all and will my stock 96 ecu work with this engine, of course a tune would be involved, but if not neccesary i would wait until it was running, any help is aprecciated thanks.

You could re use the stock bottom end from the 2v, they are essentually the same, maybe a little difference with the front cover mounting holes. I have no idea what the compression would work out to. Radiator is the same. You will probably have to get fuel rails from a 96 cobra because the mach has a returnless fuel system and yours has a return style. I would bet that you could get it running with just a tune and not a computer and harness swap but im not sure. If you finish it I would love to know what it involved, i just got a 96 cobra motor all dissasembled and dont know what to do with it. Good Luck!!

yeah thanks, i did some research and found that the alluminum block is 81 pounds lighter and supposibly the mach came with a forged crank, rods and pistons. much more stronger than my 2v iron block with hyperutectic pistons and probably some cheep steel crank, but who knows money is the deciding factor. so you dont think my stock fule rail would work as long as keep the injectors off this engine? and i will fo sho put some crazy pics up from the build keep lookin.

If the car was automatic then it's just a cast crank (same as your 2v), if it's a manual then it's forged. If it has rod knock that doesn't immediately mean the crank is shot, you need to pull it apart and have a machinist look at it to see if it can be turned. No need to buy a new crank if the original can be saved. You can get new forged cranks for well under $1200. You can find used ones all day long for $400-450. Assuming you have the forged crank version you will need the flywheel for an 8 bolt crank yours has a 6 bolt stock.

Here is a write up that might give you more info you are looking for.

2V to 4V Swap

k, so as far as the engine goes i have the crank at a machine shop being turned, and i just installed the other engine in the mach one, looks like the engine harness will plug into my factory plug, and my injector rail will go on the mach one manifold with the new injectors. my question now is will the stock 96 cpu work with the dis and mach one engine? have checked out the cpu # and ford used basicaly the same cpu from 96-04 does anyone know otherwise?
