96 V6/5 speed with 104,000 miles, A/C stopped working on the highway yesterday and the temp gauge was almost pegged. Let it cool off for a while, temp was below "normal", tried driving a little bit after checking the coolant level (which was good) and couldnt see any noticable problems under the hood (belt was fine and stuff) Had to get the car towed home, replaced the thermostat today and still no luck. What can this be? Thanks!

Check to see if there is an air lock in the cooling system. I had my thermostat replaced last week...the next day I nearly overheated on the interstate. (Because they were sloppy in flushing/refilling the cooling system.) Once the car cooled down I was able to bleed some of the air out of the radiator (took the cap off and let some of the air bubble out as the car ran) and it did the trick to get home and them some. I did however take my car back to the dealer and told them to make sure the problem is fixed. I expect that they are flushing out and refilling the cooling system. I haven't gotten my car back so the saga may continue.
Hope this helps.

How do you know it's the head gasket? Was there coolant in the oil (or vice versa). I'm having the same trouble.....replaced thermostat, week later replaced the water pump, after a flush and refill......burped the system....still sitting around 200* at highway speeds.....goes to 280* at idle
