96 V6 spindles, brakes and axles into 89 stang

I might be able to pick up all the front and back spindles, brakes, axles, lines, nuts, bolts and master cylinder from a 96 V6 Mustang.

I have read many article on the conversion, some appear contadictory. The V6's axle housing is a 7.5 notan 8.8 I believe, so only the inner axles are of any value, but they're .75 inches longer than my present axles.

The bottom line is buying all this off one 96 V6 Mustang going to get me to where I want to go,; namely better brakes, ability to install 17" tires and wheels with an emergency brake that works. ( I really don't care if the emergency brake works but I need one to pass insection in MA)

What's a fair price for these parts?

A 96 V6 and a 96GT have the same brakes basically in terms of on-the-wheel hardware. Up front it's exactly the same.

Out back, the difference is that the V6 uses a 7.5" while the V8 uses the 8.8" All you do is buy the axles and all the brake hardware and swap it over onto your '89's 8.8 axles. Make sure you take all the brake brackets and such and the axle shafts. Those parts are identical to the GT versions. Even grab the e-brake cables and the handle if you can (although handle is not vital so don'tr waste time)

There are differences in the MC/booster setup though. The MC is usable, but the brake booster however is not. It's booster rod is not curved properly so it may cause a bind. In braking systems, you don't take any chances. For a booster you will either need a '93 Cobra unit of a 94-95 unit. You can run the stock Fox if you really want but i wouldn't. You'll also need the plug to gut the factory proportioning system and use an adjustable prop valve.

With this setup, keep in mind your front wheels will not be pushed out 8mm per sude up front and your rears 0.75" each side. With the correct offset wheels this won't matter. What's nice is the new 05+ 17" wheels can fit this setup provided you remove the S197 size tires and install 245/45/17's on them.

Actually, looking through some of my notes I found the coordinates for the '87 - '93 GT:

PT6 (1638, 662, 418)
PT9 (1640, 735, 482)
PT12 (1511, 671, 461)

And for the ‘96+ GT:

PT6 (1619, 684, 415)
PT9 (1624, 758, 482)
PT12 (1491, 712, 437)

And for the ‘94-95 GT:

PT6 (1618, 689, 417)
PT9 (1623, 758, 482)
PT12 (1491, 712, 465)

These are based on the following conventions:

X = 2000 (Front of dash) (Rearward is positive)
Y = 0 (Vehicle centerline)
Z = 700 (Top of frame rail) (Upward is positive)

Using the '87 - '93 Fox GT as the baseline, the '94 - '95 SN-95 GT lower ball joint moved 20mm forward, 27mm outward, and 1mm down. The wheel center moved 17mm forward, 23mm outward, but is the same height. The outer tie rod end is moved 20mm forward, 41 mm outward, and 4mm up.

Comparing the '96+ SN-95 to the earlier '94 - '95 spindle, the lower ball joint moved 1mm rearward, 5mm inward, and 2mm down. The wheel center also moved 1mm rearward, but is the same width and height. The inner tie rod end is the same fore/aft and width, but moved down 28mm.

It's pretty easy to see the 5mm (0.20") width difference between the '94 - '95 and '96+ spindles here (the lower ball joint is 5mm inward on the newer spindle, meaning the wheel center would actually move outward 5mm when installed on an earlier vehicle).

One can also see that the '96+ spindle would require a 28mm (1.1") shorter bumpsteer spacer than the earlier piece.

I always read tha even the 94-95 spindle pushed the front wheels out slightly over the Fox spindle however nobody ever mentioned a specific number and called it negligible.

Where did you actually read this info from the engineer?

There is a thread over on corner carvers where they are talking about SVO and SN spindles. They also have the cad drawings up there, but you have to be a member to view the images.

Notice how the front sticks out past the fender with the 96 and up spindle...Im going to replace them with 94-95 spindles to tuck the wheel in...

It's incredible the amount of information that you've shared with me. It's been very helpful.

Xherdir do your tire stick out like that because of the offset of your wheels or are any wheels that I put on going to have that specific problem?

What would you guys think a reasonable price would be for all the parts we're talking about?

You have to realize that the wheels posted above are 9" wide. If you use the 8" wide wheels they will not stick out as much. But if you can find them reasonably, the 94-95 spindles do give a better look.
 
I have read that the 05 and up wheels have a different offset and that they would not stick out as much... Ive seen them in mm&ff for sale for $300 bucks. (Saleen add) I cant say that the newer wheels will work, but 300 for wheels and tires is a great price...(bullit wheels).
Some people will say that the wheel sticking out isnt that bad...Its not,but if you look from the rear to the front. The car looks like a 4x4 with the front axles wider than the rear...I personally dont like that look. Therefore Im going to replace with 94-95 spindles and tuck the wheel in....Another option would be add a 94 up rear and even that with the front...

Yes, if you use the 96+ spindles AND the SN95 rear axles and brackets for the rear brakes, then the offset will allow you to use the 05+ 17" wheels.

However, good luck finding a set of those $300 Saleen take-offs for sale. They are long sold out and supplies are very limited. You basically only get the wheels that come off whatever Saleens they produce for the year...only a thousand or so sets.

You need to change the tires anyway as they are the wrong size for our cars, so buying them from Ford for $140 new is a decent deal.
 
Is it possible to swap the booster rod from an 86 booster onto a 96 booster?

Just to clarify... Using a 9 inch wheel that is backspaced for an 05+ will give the best fitment on a fox with 96+ front and rear track length?

Uncertain about the rods. I've have to see them. It's been a while.


The 05+ 8" wheels will work. The 9" wheels I am uncertain, however in theory they might work since the backspacing on the S197 wheels is deeper than the 94-04 wheels. If you were going to fit a 9" wheel on a 96+ setup, the S197 wheels would be the way to go.

If you post this question on the wheel and tire forums on www.corral.net you might get a definite answer. I would also like to know for sure as i'd like to run 9" wheels, but not change my Sn95 track
 
I'l like to run some 9 inch deep dish on the rear and 8 inch on the front. I may (one of these days) go out and try and take some good measurement to see what offset would fit best before ordering rear axles. It's got to tuck up under the wheel wells or it's a no-go.
